Hi All,

I've been keen to try SUPping for a while, I ride a 9'6 mal and have surfed for years
I am 6'2 and 110kg.
can I get some feedback on what would be good dimensions for a board and a rough idea on prices?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Box,if you ride your longboard like Jackson Close go for a 10.6 PSH wide.
If you like the cruise aspect of longboarding go for the Naish 11.4.
I base my opinion from riding longboards for the past 20 + years and prefer to
attack a wave than cruise,I started out on the 11.4 Naish and after two months
I went down to a 10.6 PSH wide. Now everyone will have an opinion and this is just mine

Yeah Mac you are on the money for size , the PSH 10-6 wide or the Ron House 10-6 would be a good choice both boards are around the $1,800 to $1,900 mark. Box head if you are on the Gold Coast you can contact Jacko at Roar Industries for the PSH on 0418722928 or Macca at Greenline on 040210777 for the Ron House for a demo ride.

Both are great boards you can't go wrong.

Another option is to buy a slightly larger second hand board for about $1200, use it to learn on, then turn it over in about 6 months time, when you will be in a better position to choose a new board. If you buy one of the popular production boards like Starboard or Naish you should be able to sell it for close to what you bought it for.

Where about are you? Some areas don't have many second hand boards.

Suggest you make the trip to Sydney and contact Andrew Allen (he's on this forum) and arrange a demo of one of the PSHs-they're GREAT boards-you wouldn't be disappointed with one, the company stands solidly behind their product, they are a true SUP business (that's ALL they do-they're not a windsurfing company following the pack) and they hold their value very well if you ever wanted to change over to a 2nd board.

Just an opinion.

I reckon 11'0" is a good size for a starter - but would go second hand (unless you're loaded) as you will probably want to downsize after 6-12 months.

You will able to pick a good second hand board up for around $1000.

The Oxbow 11'0" Cruiser would be a good place to start as it has a true longboard feel - just what you are used to.

This one goes great out the Box:

You have a good local guy in your backyard at Erina. Have a chat to Mark from ESS.

I second that too, Mark at ESS is the guy to talk to on the Central Coast.

I am about your size and live on the Central Coast. I have a couple of boards you could try (PSH 10'6 WAA and Oxbow 11'6), which might be suitable for you. PM me with your contact details if you are interested in going for a paddle.

Casso,
where'd you get the snazzy rails on the Oxbow, do it yourself?
One of the local retailers here in Perth has Oxbows advertised on their website for $1395 for the 11' & $1295 for the 10'.
Anyone know why Oxbow is approx. $400-600 cheaper than the other popular brands? Don't they also come out of Asia (Starboard & Surftech from Thailand, Jimmy Lewis said his are made in Vietnam)?

Yeah, I did it myself - looks cool hey?

Oxbows are just good value. Those prices you've quoted are last year's prices but they are still a bit cheaper than other brands. Don't know why they are cheaper, they are great shapes and have great durability. They are produced in China, based on French and Australian designs.
