Hi all
I have been SUPing in the surf for about 5 months and loving it but am also interested in getting involved in distance paddling and competing. Any advice on the type and cost for a board for this type of paddling. It seems that there a a lot of rules on board length for racing and there are changes about which makes me cautious on not getting a board to long or short to compete on.

G,day mate since no one else has answered you i thought i might. If you search the forums their is lots of discussion on this issue.Seems to me you either go 12.6 or unlimited 16 to 18Ft.StueyC and Dale Chapman boards look good , if you want to support local shapers.Still deciding myself , i guess it depends on how serious you want to get with the racing scene.

Cheers

Here are another couple of web site address.

Laguna Bay have a 14 ft board up at the factory and I know of another 16 ft board for sale her on the coast so you might want to talk to the currently owners to see if you can get a try.

Stuey has just completed a 12'6 which will be for Sale after the Malfunction Race at the end of March.

Thanks Jodie and Michael
Do you recommend the rudder or no rudder?
I would be using it for runs in the caloundra to mooloolaba area.
Is their a group doing this in this area at the moment. I haven't sen any go by.
I will have to sweet talk the wife with the price.
Looks like I have found what goes on top of the next santa list?

I know of Aussy wahine down that way and she is currently training for Molokai this year - She has been getting out there with her Husband and doing that run.

Personally I would start with the no rudder to help develop your skills on the board then move to a rudder board - Rudder boards are that much easier to control if conditions change while paddling.

Hey Buddina SUP...I think we met a couple of weeks ago at the Mooloolaba river mouth. As Jodie said I am trying to do alot of distance at the moment and will do a Moffits to M'lba whenever we get perfect southerly's..which it's too often at the moment. I also have a 14ft race board for sale in the Classified on this site if you want to take a look. It is fixed fin..no rudder. It was the board I was on the day we met. Let me know if you'd ever like to try it. I'll let you know when we intend to do the Moffits runs.

Hi Sue
Thanks for the offer of letting me know about the next down wind run. The largest I have is a 11'6" Southpoint which I would use and I am keen to get a large board for some down wind running. At the moment I am keen to try out a variety before I plunge in and buy. I was reading the lead about the noosa festival and there seems to be some issues with board sizes for some competition. This is something else I have to find out. As I have only been using the boards for surfing I want to find out what I like for distance and would be keen on nowing about any open days where by I could try out a few boards.
I am quite enjoying the short board you saw me on now. It took a while to get use to after stepping down 2 foot.

Cheers
Anthony

Hi Anthony
I've done part/all of the Moffats-Mooloolaba / Mooloolaba-Moffats a number of times, just have to wait for the right conditions and when I get to be in Caloundra with my family.
I've been using a 14ft board similar to the one Sue is selling, which works very well on that run, except for getting through close-out shore-pound and strong cross-shores.
There is a listing of SC SUP people which I can PM you about.
I'll let you know next time I do a run. A lot of the SC paddlers will be at the Noosa Festival race on Sunday PM.

Hi Mate

I would appreciate the info and the heads up on any gathering. Disappointingly I will miss the Sunday event at Noosa as one of my daughters is in a performance that arvo. I was looking forward to the event to see the different boards etc..
