Hi Mick, a 9'6 is probably what you want, maybe not what you need.
Volume is your best guide and your target would be 140ltrs. This is for a surfing board.
Is that what you want? Or are you after a paddling board for fitness? If it is mainly fitness then pretty much anything over 10' will be good.

I would recommend either the 11'4" Naish or the 11'2" Starboard or maybe the 10'10" Walden... They're all great allrounders IMO.

Don't think smaller is better or beginners use large boards and good guys use small boards... It's much more a weight thing regardless of how good you are.

Yes boardbumps sells boards but he also gives away very willingly all his
knowledge on construction of boards or paddles, I personally have learnt
alot from him and so have alot of other people. So pull your head in
.

Mick don't go too small too early , you need to be able to sup in all conditions small boards are great on glassy days but as soon as you get a small cross chop they can be impossible to stand on. I reckon DJ is pretty spot on with the sizes but if your really are intent on a small board the Naish 9'6" is a big litre board and stable for it's size but there are better surfing 9'6" boards but they are a hell of alot harder to stand on.

Good luck Rob

G'day John, This is an open forum, opinions are free.
Pimping is when you don't state what or who you are! I post no prices for my boards, they are only available on request.
Please read my profile for details.

What I have liked most about this forum is the Aussie humour and politeness, hardly any vitriol, unlike others.

I too am with Piros, all Man (is he a man?) appears to do is have digs at people. I haven't seen or heard from Boardbumps for 20 plus years but back when I first met him he was already incredibly knowledgeable and now I see he posts some of the best stuff on this site and is willing to freely share this knowledge with all. So Rod, keep up the good work and "Man", yes pull ya' head in or you will, be hunted down!

"Man" (post removed) was an alias created by another user, and that login has been removed from the site.

I'd suggest "Pimping" is a term that comes from the original prostitution pimp; He was an individual who used many and various techniques to convince a passer by to purchase his "product" .. but that's another topic ..

Hey - for what it's worth I'll give you my two bobs worth. I can highly recommend the Walden 10'10 as I have been riding one (my first sup) for a month or so and cannot fault it. It is super stable and still surfs ok. I am going to sell the board in the near future and move onto a 9'8 Uber fish (which I have been surfing the past week) but I only weigh 74kg and I reckon I am adapting to the 9'8 pretty quickly - not necessarily well, just quickly ! Realistically I should stay on the Walden for another 6 months and work more on my paddling/turning etc but I am just frothing on the Uber fish. Honestly though if I was a bit heavier I would probably never sell the Walden because it is a really fun and forgiving board and honestly the longer you spend on your feet and not in the water - the quicker you progress.

The Walden 10'10/ Naish 10'6 and the Southpoint Kalama 10'6 all have a good name and I think would suit your needs equally. For more info on the Naish I think you could email seabreeze member Angie Pangie or for info' on the others try surfindustries.com or the guys at mctavish.com.au. Good luck and happy supping.

Hi Stompinlife,

Well like some of us kiters you also are taking the crossover to Supin! You will love it, although it's been so windy here for few weeks and i've hardly gotten out on my sup for ages, i'm missin it.
10'6 is a great board, you can't go wrong with it. Yep it is always a bonus having a chance to demo all different sizes as well, i don't think there would be much up in Darwin.

Well best of luck with it all.

Yes we're a friendly bunch aren't we.??? Not only do regular surfers (Pronies) hate us but now we are starting to turn on our own

That's what I reckon is so cool about downwind supping. You aint interfering with anyone, 'cept the occasional freighter captain when you are out in the shippinjg lanes!

I think the naish 9'6 is 130L which is not that big i didn't think. But your right it does seem to be a good board for the bigger guys wanting to bash some lips with out the tippy ness of other 9'6's and i have seen lots of 90kg guys jump on this board as there first board and not have to much trouble.

Hope this forum does not end up like the kiting one with all the bitching.

Hi Mick

Had a surf this morning and another sup out there with me. Wind was up a bit but was in a protected corner. The other sup was his second time in ocean on his 9'6 and I lost count the number of times her fell off just paddling. He was swearing and cursing having a really terrible time. He told me that he has a long history of shortboard surfing and water skiing, but he realized now that meant nothing. All I could mention is because your looking for 2nd hand Look for something arond 11 foot 29' to 30' wide and 4 3/4' thick.

Good luck with it

firstly you really have to think about what your getting into SUP for. If your looking for a board that will be good on flat and occassional surf, then IMO go for the plus 11' range. If your looking at getting into it for downwinding, would go for longest board you can find. If your looking to get into it beacuse your serious about surfing then I would go smaller to start. Personally, I started on a 10'8 which was definitely more set up for surfing and that was in March. Yep it was a mongrel to learn on with the tippyness but am pretty much over that now and am looking to go smaller and looser. Just some Friday morning thoughts aas I sit here fingers crossed that I can get in the water tomorrow morning!!!!

All we need is for a company to make a 9 foot board that surf well and is great for flat water paddling and can go really fast for long downwinders.

Had my fourth outing this morning on a borrowed 9'8 Uber fish. It surfs soooo well - very stable and forgiving on the wave and paddles in with ease and handles a late (oh my god I'm on) takeoff really well with no nose-dives. However ! I weigh in at about 75kg and I honestly reckon that for someone over 85kg who was less than intermediate level they would struggle making a lot of headway on it. Hey, I may be wrong, that's just my opinion from the way it feels under my feet. Granted, I have only ridden a Walden/Kalama 11'6/Bonga 10 and the Uber Fish and the Uber is just so far ahead of the others for surfing that it's not fair to compare them. Lets just say for my weight and lack of experiance the Uber is ALMOST perfect for a mixture of paddling speed/stability and surfability. I say almost perfect only because I haven't tried any of the Naish or Oxbow boards yet and I hope to do so before I sell my Walden and move into a more surfable board. So I am keeping my options open at this stage. Couldn't agree more though than with a comment that was made in the forum to the effect of "the best board to learn on is a borrowed one"!!!

Yer along ur lines Jacko have a 9 foot board that surfs good and good on flat water and for downwinders it somehow fold or extends out to a 18 footer.

Jacko's on the money just bolt 2 9 footers together to make a downwinder

I have ridden the Uberfish , first impression when you look at is it is too fat and won't work ...but it does, it floated me fine at 93kg.It was slow on the flat compared to the Laird 10 footer I had borrowed as well.I loved the Uber one day and hated the next I just couldn't find my feet on it surfing and I kept bogging rail paddleing for waves , to me it's just too fat overall , but on the right wave and conditions it does rip but as I said in the right conditions.Thats my 2 Bobs worth on it.If I was choosing between the naish and Uber I would go Naish. For a more high performance 9'6 I would pick the Ron House or Gerry Lopez ripper models.

Hey Piros - just out of curiousity have you sighted or tried the 10'0 Oxbow or know anyone who has ? I am thinking from what I read that it may cover any of the bases that the Uber doesn't quite get.

Hey JT - if I was the kook on the Uber then no I wasn't. If I was the other really cool dude shredding on the uber then it was def' me. (Yeah I was the wobbly one on the Uber !!) I assume you were the young gun who paddled out and made us both look very average :)
Nice morning though and got loads of nice little waves.
