Hey guys,
hows things.. Im interesting in getting a sup.. My problem is my up in darwin at the moment.. But keen on getting a SUP board soon. was looking for answers.. Im 90kg. and would like a nice alrounder.. prefer intermediate to expert as i find when ever i get beginner boards i grow out of them too quick. what boards do you reckon? what are the top reliable boards?..is there a big second hand market as i dont really keen on byeing new till i get back down south to try some boards. any help would be much appreciated..

I would recommend either the 11'4" Naish or the 11'2" Starboard or maybe the 10'10" Walden... They're all great allrounders IMO.

Don't think smaller is better or beginners use large boards and good guys use small boards... It's much more a weight thing regardless of how good you are.

I'd suggest "Pimping" is a term that comes from the original prostitution pimp; He was an individual who used many and various techniques to convince a passer by to purchase his "product" .. but that's another topic ..

thanks for the imput.. ha ha didn't realise that would turn into a bit of a bitch session..so looking around a 10'6 i think that would be a good size for me.. looking at the naish as have heard some good reviews of it.. and know there kite products are good quaility.. any other good brands..

Well like some of us kiters you also are taking the crossover to Supin! You will love it, although it's been so windy here for few weeks and i've hardly gotten out on my sup for ages, i'm missin it.
10'6 is a great board, you can't go wrong with it. Yep it is always a bonus having a chance to demo all different sizes as well, i don't think there would be much up in Darwin.

I think the naish 9'6 is 130L which is not that big i didn't think. But your right it does seem to be a good board for the bigger guys wanting to bash some lips with out the tippy ness of other 9'6's and i have seen lots of 90kg guys jump on this board as there first board and not have to much trouble.

Hope this forum does not end up like the kiting one with all the bitching.

firstly you really have to think about what your getting into SUP for. If your looking for a board that will be good on flat and occassional surf, then IMO go for the plus 11' range. If your looking at getting into it for downwinding, would go for longest board you can find. If your looking to get into it beacuse your serious about surfing then I would go smaller to start. Personally, I started on a 10'8 which was definitely more set up for surfing and that was in March. Yep it was a mongrel to learn on with the tippyness but am pretty much over that now and am looking to go smaller and looser. Just some Friday morning thoughts aas I sit here fingers crossed that I can get in the water tomorrow morning!!!!

Had my fourth outing this morning on a borrowed 9'8 Uber fish. It surfs soooo well - very stable and forgiving on the wave and paddles in with ease and handles a late (oh my god I'm on) takeoff really well with no nose-dives. However ! I weigh in at about 75kg and I honestly reckon that for someone over 85kg who was less than intermediate level they would struggle making a lot of headway on it. Hey, I may be wrong, that's just my opinion from the way it feels under my feet. Granted, I have only ridden a Walden/Kalama 11'6/Bonga 10 and the Uber Fish and the Uber is just so far ahead of the others for surfing that it's not fair to compare them. Lets just say for my weight and lack of experiance the Uber is ALMOST perfect for a mixture of paddling speed/stability and surfability. I say almost perfect only because I haven't tried any of the Naish or Oxbow boards yet and I hope to do so before I sell my Walden and move into a more surfable board. So I am keeping my options open at this stage. Couldn't agree more though than with a comment that was made in the forum to the effect of "the best board to learn on is a borrowed one"!!!

I have ridden the Uberfish , first impression when you look at is it is too fat and won't work ...but it does, it floated me fine at 93kg.It was slow on the flat compared to the Laird 10 footer I had borrowed as well.I loved the Uber one day and hated the next I just couldn't find my feet on it surfing and I kept bogging rail paddleing for waves , to me it's just too fat overall , but on the right wave and conditions it does rip but as I said in the right conditions.Thats my 2 Bobs worth on it.If I was choosing between the naish and Uber I would go Naish.For a more high performance 9'6 I would pick the Ron House or Gerry Lopez ripper models.

Hey JT - if I was the kook on the Uber then no I wasn't. If I was the other really cool dude shredding on the uber then it was def' me. (Yeah I was the wobbly one on the Uber !!) I assume you were the young gun who paddled out and made us both look very average :)
Nice morning though and got loads of nice little waves.

I have'nt seen or tried the Oxbow , but I have just picked up my brand new Gerry Lopez 10'3" absolutely beautiful.

My mate just got a shipment of 42 SUPS 9'1" , 9'3" 9,6" 10'3" 10'6" 11-0 12-0
They are a mix of Gerry Lopez and Ron House , I'll post some pics.
