I don't know..I guess it's trying to add power and reduce flitter..Who knows..But if you start seeing paddles like this in the future..you saw it here first..

Werner are the worlds leaders in paddles (imo) and they usually know what they're doing..but maybe they're trying to answer a question that no one asked..

Hiya - cool looking paddle, first thing that comes to my mind when I see that design is not so much about "power" for paddling - but it would give the paddle more directional stability when your "surfing" with it - dragging it along the wave face & in the white-wash.

doh! maybe not.... I had another look at the pic & the fins are on the inside (obtuse angle of the blade-face) so it must be a power paddling idea. when you drag the paddle while surfing you use the outside of the blade. It would be interesting to see how those fins would go both that way & the other way round though.

For me that odd paddle has those side fin things there to work like a baffle.

To try and stop the flow from one side to the other causing a flutter/wobble..and try and get the flow going off the end of the paddle rather than the sides.

I might be barking up the wrong tree here..It might also be all about using it on the wave face but I doubt it.

I reckon your spot on DJ the fins are deflecting the water flow down the paddle

Windy Miller; you should check rags out you'll get wobbly legs riding herefor sure - this autumn has turned into a swell-fest we have had a new swell on average every 10 days for the last couple of months. Lately the waves have been so straight that I've been doing more surfing on 6'3" than my sup 10'6" - I only go paddlesurf the points when its breaking wobbly & wide enough to stay away from the surfers most of the time I paddlesurf the bar or the beachies - the cool thing I like about sup is you can go ride innaccesable & marginal spots.... It's gotta be grinding to float my boat though - I get bored paddling on the flats or riding knee wobblers & ankle tappers
