You only need to watch one wave to know that this guy has spent some real time riding waves. Fading flat bits, using the rail and paddle to get to the good sections. Only time teaches you to read a wave like that.

To me this video is inspirational no doubt but it also reminds you that once the ocean has its hooks into you, you never escape.

I have friends I grew up with surfing everyday, many of them in their mid 30's have all but given up. It confuses me. Maybe the hooks never went in far enough......

When you see a guy go through so many challenges just to ride waves, you know its worth the effort. It's seriously special.

I am trying not to take my life for granted.

A few observations:

When fighting his way into the his wettie you can see his fingers are a bit twisted indicating he is quadriplegic, just to make thing a tad more difficult for him. He's probably got a fair amount of arm strength but only limited motor skills.

Seeing him struggling I can imagine someone with a mental illness having the same kind of struggle with their internal demons. Do you reckon Occy had to fight with the pies and prescription drugs while sitting on his couch for those years he was depressed? At least he had something that can be treated.
