Just received this ....Jordy Smith blowing up !!

Some of the (windsurf) crew in Maui are starting to SUP with a single front footstrap....Jason Polakow has one on his board and said it makes it feel way shorter with control.

This is now ,What's next ?

i don't really know what to think about straps, me first impression is cheating. i remember a few years ago guys were using velco attachments to do airs

I like the idea of a front foot strap for these short boards if you're into airs or even floaters.

Hey Session.. Didn't Jason say that he had a front foot strap on his 9'3" Naish?

You don't really need them for floaters - nor airs if you were proficient at them (not that I am) - same as short boards.

There were a couple of guys pulling huge airs at Narrowneck on the Goldy on Saturday while I was out...pretty impressive to see from the water, not quite as good as this one though.

Not sure I would be keen on a foot strap on a SUP, but I do think the weight and size of the SUP would make it hard to air one without it.

Hi Dave ,
Jason does paddle with Robbie a fair bit.

If anyone from the Breeze could pull off footstrap on his SUP my money would be on Keahi de Aboitiz with his Kiteboarding background .

the one foot strap is an interesting idea. I imagine its all fine until you get drilled with just one foot in. And if you are going to the effort of moving around putting one foot in, why not then go for 2 ? unless you need that back foot more forward until you actually get on the wave and haven't got time to get 2 in.

Im with you lacey , dont dig straps at all Its like tow in surfing on a special board with foot straps as opposed to a guy paddeling in under his own power with no straps to connect you to the board on the same wave I know which guy would get my respect. Also dont know I would like to be doing "airs " on a 8 foot board

Hey Brooko, (by no means am I disagreeing here but...)
"Its like tow in surfing on a special board with foot straps as opposed to a guy paddeling in under his own power with no straps"
-- Sorta like a guy already standing and using a paddle to get into the wave earlier
My point though is it's different horses for different courses.

It's hard to do a similar comparison with airs because guys will never/very rarely do 2ft controlled airs on a SUP under his own power without a strap. If guys want to do airs they will need it. I guess it all depends on what you're into.

hi, i see your point, however all ready standing and having a paddle is a bonus, get flogged with a big board and paddle in hand is not a bonus. tow in guys get whisked away out of trouble. i think standing up and having a paddle is enough pluses - have straps too is over the top
cheers

I don't tow heaps but when I do my driver always lets me get a few on the head before he picks me up! Maybe I need a new driver!

Also from what I understand, the guys using straps are using them for leverage as well, not just airs. I think it would get you more leverage but I somewhat disagree with this concept. Straps for air though I don't have a problem with if thats what you're into.

My ankles are already rooted from Mtn Biking so no straps for me.

Regarding airs, remember when NO ONE except Christian Fletcher could do airs on a sboard, now they are common place.

Young guys on SUPS will be popping em all over the place in a couple of years - without footstraps. Should be easier with a paddle than without.

Maybe i should have put this in two different topics ?

1/ Jordy Smith's Rodeo is just amazing.

2/ My point with footstrap was not to suggest SUP's busting airs with it but possibly more power and control as suggested from someone who has used it, however our boards are wider than tow boards and with a strap in the center it will be difficult to use.

Anyway i appreciate everyone's thought's and opinions on this topic.

I agree young crew will boost airs on SUP's without footstraps as the boards progress.

Interesting to read up a bit on Christian Fletcher. He was basically banned from comps and pushed out of surfing for a number of reasons, one sighted was his ahead of its time ability - along with his general attitude and drug consumption.
Interestingly similar to Matt Archibald, both of whom Pottz mentioned as at the forefront of aerial surfing back in the late 80's.

Both seem to have similar stories to that of Jay Adams in skateboarding.

We used to do tow ins (before it was cool) on normal surfboards without foot straps in the mid 90s

I still think airs on sups are gunna be pretty gay They will also cause more danger and damage in a lineup when they dont make it. I think airs on a 8ft plus board is getting pretty silly

Your foot comes out. I've never had my foot caught in the strap wave sailing in 18 years when I have been hammered. I would assume it would be the same on a SUP.

I'm neither for or against the footstrap idea, but am looking forward to some footage of guys getting crazy with a strap.

Some of the GONG riders were using footstraps on their SUP boards a couple of years ago.
