Good Lord is Kirra Surf still there (ex QLDer). Is that store one of the oldest around now???? I can remember it as a kid in the 70s it was then in the old spot up near kirra point (if my failing memory serves me right).

Unlikely it's shutting down as it's owned by Billabong these days.

It's not in the same spot it was in the old days nor is it owned by the same person (Peter Turner) so the name lives on, but that is about it. I grew up living a couple of minutes up the road from the old shop, I remember spending many an afternoon in the shop as a grommie, hanging out, flicking through surf mags, annoying the staff.

I remember the boards, looking at them and thinking how cool it would be to own one. Ahh the memories. I can remember when a surfboard was less than $200 for a new one and I thought that was an absolute fortune in the day.

If you havent read the financials lately Billabong have been close to collapsing for awhile now. A heavy shift into buying out retail space in a market that was dying in the arse was a big mistake. Lots of talk going on in the swellnet politiks on this one...

the surf fashion market as slowed down for sure, but i reckon it will always be there in some form.

my two cents worth- boardies and t shirts are ridiculously over priced.

some those boardies they want $250. if you pay that you need your head read

i tend to agree that boardies and Ts are well overpriced. I was in Hawaii last year and what we pay $90 for in Hawaii its like $25 and the mainland yanks will tell you that is expensive.

Cant say I remember the choc milk, but do remember a couple of video games out front. Used to get the refund on soft drink bottles and head down there for a few games with a couple of mates.

Oh and I only mentioned something to my wife today about picking Mulberries from the tree that grew over the fence behind the shop. Reckon I would have been all of about 10 years old.

I agree that the new KS is nothing compared to what it once was, a shop for surfers instead of a shop for those who wanted to be part of the "crowd".
