How much SUP experience though.... That size board is usually a 2nd board for a person your size.... Or try and borrow a mates "barge" () to get your sea legs, then you might be pretty right on it. If you naturally have really good balance, that will also help.

I haven't paddled them (McTavish SUP's), but I have seen them, and they look good. I have have also heard good reports.... Have a troll through the Board Review section....

The full mid rails on the McT SUP's should help the stability / paddling balance, in theory. But the large soft mid rails shouldn't bother you when surfing off the tail.

This link doesn't say much...

Ive got a 9"6 Mctavish and love it. Im 82kgs and have had the Mc sup out in a variety of conditions its a good alround sup for surfing. The 9"6 was a starting point for me and ill always keep it in my quiver. Check out some of the older posts theres a few reviews on them. My Mate is about your weight and hes surfed on my 9"6 with ease. Shop around prices seem to be dropping . cheers

naish and psh are better

anyone who has been on this site more than a week knows I'm no fan of the imports

its not because they are no good, its because I'd like to see us being able to keep the industry local and money and employment in this country
(idealy I'd love for a cobra type factory to be set up in aus, where the intellectual property of design and branding is commisioned through a local factory).

the custom boards I get made from local shapers are always influenced by the finer points of the boards I have ridden from overseas; everybody steals ideas from everybody, music, fashion, industry; its evolution in its essential form, and I talked this over earlier this year with Randy Naish in kailua when picking apart the Hokua 9', my altime favorite short sup, which I borrowed heavily from with my latest custom shaped by the dude down the road.

why I say naish and psh are better, they just seem more refined.
mctavish seem to be a product that was just put out to get its foot in the door and capture a market

they seem shapeless and middle of the road, which may be fine if thats what you're looking for. but if you're an experienced surfer who wants to surf a board, I'd go for psh or naish in a similar size, second hand to start with then take what you like from that introduction to a local shaper for your next one.

Hi Mikesup,
I am 115kg and have a 10' McTavish and love it. It goes great with a decent hexcore quad setup. It is very user friendly and goes gangbusters in hollow conditions. It is really well made and doesn't chip easy on the rails like some of my previous boards. I have no rail tape and haven't had any bad chips yet in 12 months of use in all conditions. I think you should demo the board if you can, I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Good luck.

I own the 9'6'' McT for a year, and do not like the board, not stable paddling into the waves, not good surf performance either.

Since then bought a CoreBan 9'0 fusion, and it's better, in every aspect!
