I'm looking at getting a second board for fat surf, ocean paddling & maybe the occasional down winder. My preferences so far are:

1: PSH 12'
2: Naish 11'4
3: Starboard 11'2

I currently ride a Surfshapes 10' x 30" which I really like and will remain as my everyday go to board. I'm interesred in information on the stability of the PSH as it is by far the narrowest of the 3 boards above. The only board I have ever ridden under 30" is the Naish 9'6. I found it ok in clean surf but hard work in windy choppy conditions. Can anybody that has surfed the PSH Gun comment on the stability relative to other boards they have ridden.

Cheers

Hi Thomo,

I'm 6ft 105kg and have ridden the gun in small waves and about 20kn of shore no issues at all.

It is significantly more stable than my 9'6 and even my 10'6 but it still is very agile for a board of 12ft.

It catches waves with ease even down to 6 inchs.

And from the pics I have seen blane put up it works well in smokin 10 - 15 ft too lol.

i should have a demo 12 ft PSH gun here soon hopefully so you can give it a go we also have the 11'4 Naish for demo anytime so just pop in to our new store and take them for a paddle. you wont know unless you give them a go.

Have you considered the 12' Naish glide? - probably going to get cheaper now as the new 14' glides are about to be released. Sounds to me that's what you may be after.

From your list The Naish 11'4 is more of a fat surfing board, and I believe the gun is not really suitable - it's just what it's name suggests - a big wave board - although I'm sure that many PSH experts will disagree and tell me that it does everything in all conditions.

If I had to choose one of the pop outs from list, that will match your criteria, I'd be looking closely at the Starboard 11'2 - I've heard nothing but good reports on them. And quite a few owners of them on this forum will testify to this. I believe they are a great all rounder: they surf well, are great on flat water, ocean paddling and are suitable for down-winding.

You could probably pick one up now for a very good price.

I agree with Jacko,

Put the starboard, the glide, the gun and what ever else you like side by side in the same conditions and try them and see which one suites you!

I was lucky enough to do that on the OG13 day with the Glide, the Gun and I'm not sure which one of the Naish's it was 11'4 or 11'6.

I don't think the demo, demo, demo thing really cuts it in the real world.

A board to me is a little like a marriage. You can demo a board for an hour, just like you can take a prostitute for an hour - it doesn't mean just because it felt good or bad at that particular point in time that the board/woman will make it good/bad relationship in the long term, in all conditions that you will find yourself in?

I tend to go with what feels right, I do the research etc, look around and then after a while something will just click.

I own (and yes, paid for) the PSH 12' Gun. From your description of what you want it to do - the PSH Gun would be perfect. And it's one of the most stable boards I have ridden.

Check it out in these fat waves:

And it ocean paddles great too (6th in the Snowy):

Casso, how would it compare to the Naish 11'6 for stability and glide?

I'll have to check out the specks of it, I'm in the market for a flat water/downwind/fishing board. I had the perception it was primarily a narrow tippy board used for big waves?

Oliver,

With my wide ass on it, it creams the glide on ocean paddling and catching runners from my 1 hour on each of the boards!

I want to do some Gay Gondaliering (downwinders) and was going to buy a naish glide thats why i tried them!

But again I think it depends on weight, skill all sorts of things!

But what can you tell from a demo PMSL!

I've only had a really quick run on the Glide and I can't remember if I've tried the Naish 11'6". The PSH Gun is only slightly more tippy than the Glide - yet a fair bit better in the waves I would think (I've not ridden the Glide in the waves).

As far as fishing is concerned - you might be better with a fuller nose board to support your crate of gear up the front (Naish Glide might be too pointy as well).

Oh and sorry about the GoPro footage Oliver - I know you hate that cr*p!

You are a pioneer and legend for bringing us those - I loved the first hundred of them. I even tried it myself for a day. It was after I watched one too many of them that I started to get concerned about the practice of old guys filming themselves using the googly eyed things mounted to their board, spending more time making sure they were pointed in the right direction instead of catching waves and enjoying the simple stuff.

Back on topic though, I'm in the market for something pretty tough, that I can load all my fishing gear on and land on islands in the ocean and forget about everyone else - the big Naish has been great for that to date, but I can think of a few more modifications, that I'm after.

The same board will be used for flat water workouts, trawling in the bay for salmon, and I want something that will keep up with DJ and Jonathan on those wild downwinders they have - I think I have to go 14ft and will need a board that weighs no more than 15kg.

I won't use it in any surf, but want something that looks more like a surfboard than a kayak.

With the range of pop outs I'm seeing I'm thinking I'll end up going custom again.

Ok, here goes Mac.

The demo thing doesn't work for me because it reminds me of getting off the Oriana in Suva when I was about 15. The curries (am I racist?) came running towards us as we came down the boardwalk, they asked us for our names. When I told one of them mine he quickly grabbed a wooden mask and carved my name in it - I felt obliged to buy it. That's what demo days feel a bit like to me - all about the sell.

In my life experience, some things, after you think about the pros and cons for long enough and think you have a good understanding of what you are after, a particular situation just magically presents itself, clicks and makes perfect sense. It's hard to explain a bit like chk chk boom.

I think demoing boards is the only way, you will get the feel off what it can do. i have the 12 foot gun PSH at the moment which will go up to the goldie soon . I love the thing, its easy to paddle, will out surf any 12 footer.

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen. Phil, I was hoping you would reply as I know you have tried a lot of boards. Likewise Casso, although your idea of stable may be a little different to mine. Oliver, thanks for your input but I am really looking for a big surfing board that I can also do some longer paddling on, rather than the other way round. Which is why I favour the 3 boards I mentioned over the Glide. Anyway it sounds like the PSH will be stable enough for me but it would be nice to try it first. So, looks like i'll be down to check out the new shop Jacko.

Cheers

I paddled the PSH 11'er the other day and was amazed at how good it was.. I think it may even be a better option than the PSH 12' Gun

Yes DJ, I must admit the PSH 11' only just missed the cut on my list. I weigh in about 85kg and thought it might be a bit too much board for me.

I have ridden all 3 although briefly, I own a 12er so you can see where my sympathies lie.

All 3 will do the job, but if waves are your most important criteria then the 12er wins hands down end of story.

Oliver I see your point about demo 'days' but borrowing the boards for a day or two is the best way. Dealers I know(see my dealer support thread) over here do that. Recommend the demo.

Thomo,

The PSH 11 with the right fin set will rip with 87kgs on it! I have seen 3 of my friends ride it that way! I would suggest FG or PC5 inside foil fins and use a center fin adaptor to convert the fin box for the FCS fin! I have my 10'6 set up the same way and Revvin will tell you it kicks a$$!

With this fin set even a beginer can rip turns! The bigger the waves get the better this board performs. The key is to get the Kick Pad right over the middle of the center fin box so your weight is positioned correctly. Get your foot right back on the kick pad during turns and your away! You will think your going to fall of the back initially but the boards primary stability is great!

I have ridden the 11 in 2 x OH and loved it, but it wasnt a threatening wave just a lovely point break!

IMO it is more stable than the gun due to width and also has great glide!

If Jacko has a demo board try it you will be impressed.

The 11.4 naish is also very good board IMO (only surfed it twice at PRK) but handles very differently to the PSH11. The 11'6 naish is far more boaty and if you surf a shoter board, I dont think you will like it for obvious reasons!

The Starboard Wopper, I hear has big board feel and stability and reasonable glide as well due to width and overall volume but I have not surfed one!

It will come down to personal preference and they way you like to surf!

Good 3 to pick from , my preference from those 3 would be

1.PSH
2.Starboard/Naish

As you are a Gold Coast boy check out the 12-0's & 12-6's Dale Chapman is making they look unreal . I think there is still one 12-0 in the Greenline shop at Mermaid the artwork on the board is beautiful.

They are worth a look. www.chapmansurfboards.com

All the bloke I ride with, we swap boards from time to time to see how they go. Its a great way to see what and how different boards work.

Oliver,
Just make sure when you demo a board, don't let them carve you name in it

gotta love this pic

ps. i'm the dude with the red helmet

the bloke on my arse rode up the back of my board and nicely ejected me off

i scrambled back on it and the 2 dudes to the right sandwiched me and started hacking at my board and legs with their paddles like contestants at a royal easter show wood chopping event

with me cracking up laughing and yelling "i'm not carring you guys the whole way boys"

was pretty awrsome watching the crew of 30+ charging off into the distance in front of me

by the way

the 12ft psh gun is a great board that should be more classed as an "ALLROUNDER" rather than just a "GUN"

i took it for a paddle in some nice over head waves and it performed well

and casso paddled it in the snowy race as did sam from kialoa

and both placed well
