I read that story and had sweaty palms and was on the edge of my seat.
You are one lucky man. It also shows me that a person as prepared and as experienced as you are can still get into trouble.
I will never be attempting a crossing like that in those conditions. Your story has reinforced to me what my skill level is.

This is a good time to remind ourselves that we should stay focussed on safety at sea. There are a lot of new paddlers getting into downwinding lately and its important that we encourage them to adopt a safety first attitude.

A good legrope is a must have. This is the single most important safety item that everyone should always have on them. The new coiled ones are far better than the old ones and you barely notice having them on.

I have just put up a new post: "What's in the backpack". Hopefully this will encourage more people to take a few extra safety items out there with them. You may never need to use them but if you (or someone else out there) is faced with an emergency situation you will be thankful that you had them.
