I am considering attending a conference in Lorne in March 2010. I would be travelling from Perth ,via plane to Melbourne then hire car to Lorne. I might go for a holiday as well and SUP. Is Lorne a good location to SUP. I ride an 11ft Jimmy Lewis . Im not sure how I would get it there. I think Qantas length limit is 9ft , and getting a hire car with roof racks could be challenging. Hiring a SUP might be easier however probably not possible. Any help appreciated.

I think I might be able to fit in your suitcase happy to show you around

Yes there are waves[}:)][}:)]

Qantas took my 10 4 board bag no worries not a tape measure in sight

Ask AA about boards on roof of hire cars

Tell Qantas it's a long set of golf clubs..

Get some soft racks for that hire car.. and Lorne would be almost as good as Noosa..

I might come down for a paddle with you..

Hey Guys dont get Jereme's hopes up about good surf at Lorne

I live 30 min from the place......it tends to be a last resort sort of break.
After a strong east wind dies it can have a good wind wave. But that's quite rare. The ground swells in recent years have not been big enough. And if it is good you will have to battle many surfers.
Check it on Coastwatch cam you can get a good idea what its like, you will see what I mean
It's not realy worth the trouble, particulaly that time of year..small ground swell.
You should ring Lorne surf shop they may hire you a board or Anglesea here 30 min away will, then surf PRK with us.
I have a 10' x 28" your welcome to borrow.

Yeah Lorne can be good on it's day but I can't remember the last time I had it good.
Recently I had Kennet River reall good (about 30 minute past Lorne) and it is rarely
crowded except for holiday times.

Otherwise PRK like LSD said is a great spot!

Hi Jeremy ,

On your way to Lorne call into Strapper Surf at Torquay (03-52 612312) and i can help you out with a demo board & paddle , if i have time will show you all the breaks along the surfcoast and chase some waves.

Bring soft racks for your hire car if you have them.

I wouldn't bring the board on the plane. Hire a board when you get here and get some soft racks like these ones. I don't think it's 100% legal in Vic. I know in Perth all the companies won't hire you a car if you plan on strapping boards to the roof. I'm sure there are places you can hire a good sup around Torquay

Yeah what the others guys said. Soft racks sounds like your best option.

My friend in the car hire industry says do not tell them you intend to carry boards on the roof and to get the extra insurance when you hire in case you leave any marks on the roof or in the rubber door seal.

Hi Jeremy,
I was at Lorne this morning for the Outlaw sup race.
Caught 4 waves....& that was a struggle using a 20' board
It can be a great wave, but not today....far better options down the road.
Cheers

Dean, did you notice if Cathedral rock was working? I figured with this swell that it would have been.........

Jeremy, Lorne may not have the best surf in its bay but you will be no more than 30 minutes from heaps of places to surf. I would definitely take the chance to surf some of these places if you can. Get a car and some soft racks (or you can borrow mine or Phils) and borrow a board. You would be pretty unlucky not to find something to surf mate!

Cheers,
Ronnie

To give you guys an idea what Lorne Point is like, today was a 1.5 m droping swell, s wind early, so being mid week I thought it a good time to sample some small waves in the protected bay of Lorne.
As you can see it will take a fair bit more swell to produce anything sizable.
Snappy little fun wave....but at this size 10 is a crowd.

Andy reckons this looks much better.
He wanted a pink ribbon in your hair but I thought that was going a bit far.

This should have been the money shot that was published in this week's Surfcoast Development Times or should that be Crimes.
