Wow that sucks!!

Just out of interest what is the craic when things like this occur? Is it surf etiquette to pay for the repair or do you just swap obscenities and or punches and go your seperate ways

In this case it was an act of stupidity, the guy had jumped of prk point & caught the next broken wave that I was about to paddle over (head high foam) I didnt have time for evasive action, if I had turned the board it would have presented more of a target, I held my course in the hope he had enough control to miss.
After the hit there was no "are you right mate" or anything he just paddled away to get a wave.
During the rest of the session I made my displessure known & hosed him when ever I could[}:)]

We need a decent rule understood by all. I watched my poor housemates board get smashed up by an idiot. I am surprised that he did not take her head off at the same time.

Anyway her board is a complete write off and he offered nothing in return. He was actually parked in our street we discovered later so when he got out we wandered over the road to have a yarn and he just repeatedly said that its not his problem and that he would not give her a cent.

He has not parked in our street again since though!! I think he knows that there will be some wax on his windscreen!!!! Any oldie but a goodie!!!

The basic rule of thumb is that "what happens in the water stays in the water". Things happen in the water and that's where they need to stay.

Hey Dean,

I have always been very relaxed in the water and always walked away from conflict as I thought it was pointless.

I dont have any issue with an accident as it happens to all of us.

If its my fault and it has been twice in 10 years I apologize and pay for the quality repair no questions asked.

After my experience at Torquay point 7 weeks ago where my board was maliciously damaged, I have changed my mind. It appears to be particularly necessary to make a point!

I am over it but happy to explain.

I was paddling at Torquay and as usual stay wide and keeping in rotation as there were only a few people out. I caught a head high plus wave and went to bottom turn. A short boarder paddled directly into my path then pushed the tail back up under the nose of my board and sat on the nose.

I didnt realise it at the time but this put a 12 inch gash in the under side of the board. I stopped to see if he was ok as I was seriously concerned for his safety and at that point could not understand why anyone would do such a stupid thing.

I later found out that this is commonly done to advise you this is not the place for you to be.

He laughed at me told me to F#$% off and advised me to look at the underside of board.

PS the PSH 12 Gun with 110 kegs on it turns lightly glassed short boards into recycling material.

Lacey,

It truely scared the pants off me when he did it. The further I faded to miss him the harder he paddled to ensure I wouldnt so he could line the board up.

I could literally have killed him if he got it wrong.

Risking you life for what? Nothing but ego!

Phill you are too nice. We have blockers over here who paddle in front of you so their mate can go. They do it once to me then I get any wave I want 12er and 105kg helps.

OG... I ride Mal and a SUP. I wouldnt argue with someone carrying
a 7 foot carbon fibre "WACKING STICK" so my advice...
Stand up for yourself and crack em over the back of the head if
they try tactics on ya. if theres gunna be this constant whinge
from prone surfers at least give em something substantial to cry
about.

I'm seeing more blockers down here now. Maybe people are talking and the word is getting out there about how this is done. Generally only at better quality breaks that are more popular with experienced shortboarders.

My opinion is that it's the person paddling out that should try get out of the way and the person up and riding has right of way, but being on a SUP we should be aware of others around us and allow enough room to A) avoid accidents at all costs, and B) keep the peace in the water. If there are too many people in the water that accidents are likely then surf somewhere else.

Your incident Dean was a bummer cos as we all would understand sometimes you can run out of options when there's 5ft high white water coming at you.

Blockers? Never had the pleasure of meeting any.

But I will say this....If a Blocker....or blockhead was to ply his trade in front of me....particularly after I have shown respect for others in the water at the time, I would have no hesitation in carving my initials across his back......"oops sorry mate maybe next time you will think better of paddling in someones path"

Maybe I've never seen a blocker because others see I give respect..... but at the same time mean buisness.
Surf is for fun...nothing else
Lets keep it that way
