Hey all. I've been chatting with Greg the president of SUPWA and he suggested I start a Pod and to be the captain down here.

The Pod system is open to all forms of SUP. I dont own a race board or downwind board and I'm not sure I have seen many down here. Having a Surf Pod down south makes alot of sense. As Pod Captain I would be the contact point for people enquiring about where to surf down south, organising surf sessions as we feel, and getting a group of like minded people together to hang out and SUP. If it's flat we could go for a paddle on the river, in the bays or around the Capes?

Usually I SUP on my own and my local haunts are often empty. When there are a few people out its ok for a SUP to fit in but not a Pod. I'm not suggesting we get a Pod together and crash Main Break. That is not the idea at all.

It would also be handy for Comps that SUPWA could organise down south, having someone on the ground so to speak.

There is a Pod at Fremantle, Bayswater and Mandurah. A Canning Bridge Pod about to come online next month and perhaps a Geraldton Pod.

All I need to do is find 3 other people and apply to SUPWA and they will support it. It is like a SUP club, but without the admin headaches. We get the insurance (if we are all SUPWA members) and can post on SUPWA Facebook for sessions.

SUPWA have a Pod Co-ordinator who I as Pod captain can contact for any issues we want the committee to hear and I can attend any of SUPWA meetings as Pod Captain if I'm up in Perth (but it is not mandatory).

Greg may be able to post on here a little more detail on how it works.

I will have mine down over summer. Courts, Fernanda and Damon (Eastough) would be a good start for DW paddlers.

Thats where I was thinking that maybe someone else would like to be the Pod captain?
During summer I SUP in the morning offshores and windsurf in the arvo.

With all the GWSs around I not sure how keen I will be paddling from redgate to Cow Bay :( might dig the kite out.

Do you need to be a local :-)

From my perspective would be good as I'm looking for the surf side, not flat water or racing, and there's only maybe 5 days at Cott when the surfs even worth it and im seeing too many shadows in the water at Wedge :)

I'll have a month off on my new roster so would be keen to come down and hang out with a SUP crew.

Good on you Greeny!
Margaret River SUPWA Pod would be a great regional Pod, especially for Surfing and Downwinding. Pod set up just requires 4 SUPWA memebers to apply to create a Pod and SUPWA provides insurance (thru SWA) for members and the Pod has a direct connection to the SUPWA committee.

It's all about getting a group of like minded people together and SUPn!

All SUPWA members are welcome to join other Pods, there is no joining fee or regional boundaries. If a session is posted on our facebook or seabreeze, feel free to join in. It is all about inclusivity and fun. If you're not a SUPWA member, you're still welcome, but we do suggest you join up for insurance reasons (which is a good idea anyway - it covers personal accident, shark attack, getting hit in the head by your board!, etc)

Cheers
Greg

There should be some interest from a few Margaret River Paddlers I met this week at the ASI SUP instructors course. Cinde Fisher ([email protected]), Peter and Astrid are all keen on starting up SUP fitness and SUP yoga classes at Gnarabup Beach (boat Ramp). Should be a great mixture of SUP activities for the Pod. Lots of interest from people up here to travel down for an epic downwinder or two. I also spend half of Summer in Yallingup, so would be glad to help out and get involved.

Hi Guys
sorry I've been away over the weekend and missed the last couple of posts. I should clarify:
The SUPWA committee has just approved a pro rata fee for all SUPWA membership after October 1st. We have to have our renewals in line with SWA (in Jan), but that is a bit rough to excpect new members to pay the full amount for 3-4 months of use and insurance. We can't pro rata the SWA component of our fee, so we have changed our component.
The $50 applies to all new SUPWA membership as of October 1st, with full renewal in Jan 2013. This gives you full personal accident cover, discounted to free entry at SUPWA and MOC events.
Thanks to Greeny for firing up down south, we should have this Pod open as of next month.

Cheers

Greg
