Have any of you Supping brothers (or sisters!) from the East Coast paddle surfed on Maui?
We are attending a wedding there in April and I won't be packing the 11'2 starrie as hand luggage.
Unsure whether my PSH 9'6 will be here by then (AA?) but I guess it would be crazy to take it anyway (not sure the baggage guys would understand our passion).
I gather the locals can get a bit excited also
Any thoughts/ locations welcomed

Pono Bill lives on Maui and I'm sure he'd help or at least have info for you.

He last made a comment here on the 'hydration back-packs' thread.. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=48626

Send him a PM.

I was there for a wedding last June and I hired a SUP (think it was a 12' Laird) from Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy at Lahaina

But one of the Hawaiian boys can probably point you in a better direction

You will love it Basecurve. Heaps of places to rent boards but if you just rock up it can be quite expensive particularly with the dollar the way it is. If you can take your paddle do it - or buy one there, they are much cheaper than here.

Kanaha Kai www.kanahakai.com have Starboard but not a huge range unless things have changed since last year but they will do a deal if you book ahead - just e-mail them to see whether they have anything newer than the 12'6 and 12'2.
(just checked the site and they list 11-2 and 10-5!!) They are great to deal with as well.

Hi-Tech and Hawaiian Island also have heaps of SUP gear but in my experience very expensive to rent from (maybe the recession has fixed that!)

Pono Bill certainly worth talking to and also Giampaolo Cammarota who is a friend of mine that sometimes has really good contacts for accommodation and gear, knows everyone and is a fantastic guy that you can trust - here is his blog site mauisurfreport.com. Giampaolo and also the guys at Kanaha Kai will tell you what is working everyday too.

You can really luck out on swell and wind in Maui but whatever you get it's a life changing experience! PM me if you want any more info.

My recommendation would be to join the discussion forum at Standupzone.com.

Most of the active members are on Maui and will be happy to help.

With your accent, you can probably sneak into some select surf spots on your standup - pleading ignorance - but it's safer not to push your luck.

There are many surf shops that rent SUP's. The zone will have good advice.

If you enjoy downwinders, a Maliko run should be on your agenda.

Go ahead and start a thread on the zone. Be specific about travel dates, where you will be staying (north shore, west side or south) and what type of SUP you prefer.

That's very helpful fellas.I shall follow up all those leads.
Thats the great thing about this site and sport ...its a real community thang.
I shall look forward to posting some snaps...(better learn how to post an Avatar first!)
I was born BC (before computers) but that is no excuse.Uploading jpegs from my Mac to the Seabreeze site seems to cause a conflict.
I will get Laurie onto it.
Thx again

Just came back from Maui Tuesday.... I was out visiting PonoBill (bro) for the distance/downwind board showcase. Plenty of places to rent for sure. Maui is very SUP friendly...although hookipa is somewhat a unspoken no SUP spot unless you are Laird or Dave Kalama or a few other chosen few. You'll usually be advised to find spots where you see others already on SUPs. If you see a spot that is all regular surfers its probably that way out of mutual respect. So many other spots it doesn't matter though. Surf was actually down while I was there...figures...except for the last few days. You should hook up with some of the Maui crew for a downwinder or two...what a freakin blast!
