You know you're hooked when :
You've just hanging for the call from DJ
You've already been figuring out how to juggle the weekend family activities
You dump your saturday sailing (forecast 5 knots) so you can take the kids paddling on Saturday instead of Sunday
You're buttering up the wif before you launch the "I'm going downwinding with DJ" anouncement...

DJ, aren't you doing the SUP VIC Introduction to Downwind on Sunday?

As I understood the plan was to finish at Green Point not Sandringham. The group is to be divided into pairs so a newcomer, novice or moderately inexperienced downwind paddler would be placed with a 'mentor' or experienced downwinder.

I'm sure anyone who can't wait or doesn't feel compelled to put a little something back into the sport can always organise their own run separately.

Yes.. We can all meet at Sandy to load.. Then stop off at Green Point to drop cars off there and pick up anyone who went straight there.. Then as few cars as poss drive to St Kilda.. We'll pair people up.. and it will be a great opportunity for downwind virgins to loose it..

Right, Sunday is ON for the first SUP VIC Introduction to Downwind session. Woo-hoo!

The plan is to meet at Sandringham - Sandy Beach Cafe at the very end of Jetty Rd at 10am. From there we will load boards on cars but possibly relocate the end pick up cars to Green Point Brighton. Start point will be Langridge St West StKilda. It will be an Introduction to Downwinding session but to all experienced practitioners, please come along as your Jedi wisdom and know-how is much desired by the young apprentices.

Our intention is to assign each newcomer with an experienced mentor to provide instructions and guidance.

The ideal board for downwinding on Port Phillip is 14', but a 12'6" works just fine. Non-race boards much shorter than that are not recommended. We may be able to arrange something suitable for those who put their hands up fastest.

As this is a SUP VIC social event, all participants will be required to wear leg ropes and PFDs. The inflatable bumbag style is allowed. We will have VHF radios out on the water for communication among the crew. The distance is roughly 10 km and we are never more than 1 km off shore.

Please note, downwind paddling is an adventure sport in open water and there are inherent risks involved. Conditions on the day will be challenging, and although we will take precautions, you must understand that you participate at your own risk.

If you are eager to join in, email me on [email protected] or ring DJ on 0433 109 989.

Big Sailing World Cup event at Sandringham on Sunday could make access and parking a nightmare at the yacht club. What do you say we meet at Green Point at 10am instead?

Really enjoyed the run today, bit messy at times but good to get back on the bucking bronco after such a long absence...not done a DW since "Big Thursday" ( just worked out that was back in March! ) .

And big ups to Shazzy, dry hair on the maiden run today...nice one!
