This articles states that Melbourne's Bike Scheme will have 600 bikes, at a cost of $5.5M. Can someone explain how it is costing over $9,000 per bike (including dock) !!! ???

I'll go out on a limb here, and suggest that the Bike & Dock costs $4,000 on average (including pay stations), and it has cost the government another $5,000 per bike, for Project Management !!

And another thing - they haven't announced what the scheme Blow Out is yet !! Maybe it becomes a $6.5M scheme !

Bike share scheme saddles up slowly in bleak weather
CLAY LUCAS
June 12, 2010

A bike station on Flinders Street.
MELBOURNE'S new $5.5 million bike share scheme was used 253 times in its opening week of operation, the first statistics from the state government show.

Roads Minister Tim Pallas said more riders were likely to begin using the bikes as more were rolled out across Melbourne, and as the weather improved.

''To be honest, weather hasn't been so great and I think I know exactly why nobody else is using it at the moment,'' Mr Pallas told 3AW yesterday. ''People are starting to use the bikes casually.''

Only 100 of the 600 bikes that will make up the scheme have been installed so far in the CBD.

This belongs in "Shooting the Breeze".

I'm wondering where people are going to ride to? When I ride to work I walk the last few blocks. It's too dangerous and unpleasant on the city streets to ride and I get to cool down before going into work.

If you have to cover moderate distances in town it's easier, safer, cheaper and healthier to walk or catch a tram.

Well thank your lucky stars that its not been set up by the Federal Govt - as then it would probably cost $90,000 a bike and would probably almost be cancelled by now!!

K Ruddy and his selective top 5 have a very poor record in delivering projects.....I am a fan of these types of schemes as long as critical mass can be achieved. In Sydney the Major is presently attempting to put down 200km of cycle ways and causing mass disturbance in the process.

Are you going to use it Simondo?

i work all over the cbd.... on my own cycle.

they need to supply hemets with the bikes if they want more usage...

they're getting used though, bays are half full most of the time...

unless they're getting flogged .....

more bikes, less cars ... the way to go ...
been hit 3 times and car doored once in the last month

the new car parks outside / bike lanes on the inside....now that is a waste of money!!!

Yes, bikes are definitely part of the solution going forward!

I would like to see a "work for the dole" type scheme, where the government would train people to recondition old bikes, at a price of slightly less than $9,000 per bike !!

I thought it was a great idea till I heard about the $50 yearly subscription fee and the $500 late return fee..

I also bet they're heavy clunkers to peddle.. I hope it works but I doubt it will.

I think the empty spaces in the racks are so you have somewhere to park the bike when you arrive.

yeah cant see it lasting in melb either...

drivers rarely check for bikes when they open their door, passengers even less. gettin doored really really f'ing hurts,

the safest place to cycle in melb is in the middle of the trams tracks, but thats illegal.
