It's been a while. Anyone interested in a paddle through the city tomorrow (Tuesday) night?

I rekon you can count me and my wife in for the next one. That looks awesome. I love the idea you can just paddle around checking stuff out. It's not a race or anything is it? Just sightseeing?

I got another 3 mates into SUP recently who all just purchased boards that might be keen as well.

The more the merrier. No, it's definitely not a race! DJ was floating around taking pictures of people taking pictures of us! It was a beautiful evening. I'm hoping that we get a good turnout to the next one. An armada of SUPs cruising down the Yarra would look great.

All I know is...the gondola was VERY slow. I had no trouble catching and passing it. And I'm not sure how it would handle in the surf....

If it makes you feel any better Stuey I was thinking of you today as I did a long paddle much higher up the Yarra on my 12'6" Starboard. On my own and watching the wake of the board coming off a couple of feet back from the nose because of the rocker (I know I need to get a life!) and just wondering how the Pene wake would propagate, no doubt completely differently. Maybe a dumb question but is the advantage of the longer boards extended waterline length only for better glide or is it also a help in ocean swell. Seems from the results of some of the races that the longer race boards are not always faster - I realise there are a million variables. Trying to work out what the real advantages of 16' or 18' over 12'6" in racing boards is and whether that is worth the hassle of living with the length - talking strictly recreational here. The other variable of course being width - is there an ideal width/length combo for recreational distance paddling in both open ocean and also flat/small chop. Hate to give you homework but I'd love to hear your thoughts on how all the factors stack up for punters wanting to do 20 or 30k paddles. Truth be known I'm mentally selling all the unused windsurf/road bike crap in the shed wondering if it adds up to a Punters Pene!
Took some photos today of the fruit bats in the trees along a section of the Yarra - must be thousands of the buggers. Must be wild at dusk!

Jonathan... Helke and I have seen the bats a few times now and we've also paddled past them at dusk..and even pitch black dark..

They are amazing.. Here's a couple of our pics.

Stay well clear of underneath them. They carry some nasty viruses, distributed in their poo and wee. Seriously.

Wondered about being pooped on but figured I was pretty safe with them hanging upside down!

They twist their bodies to the side without changing their position on the tree. So, no Jonathan, not safe!

Yeah I'm keen and could get a few crew together. Need a couple days notice to organise a demo board from SHQ or something for my wife.

Stuey, just found the section on Stand Up Zone with all the size/shape/length discussion so I'll digest all that and come back with any specific questions rather than wasting your time.

Hey Stuey... I was chatting to an old mate today down at Torquay and we got talking about SUP's..

When I said that one of the best racing SUP's is Aussie made he said there's only one guy that could make a board like.. I said who?.. and he said your name.

See pic below.. Do you recognize him?.. .. His initials are SP... (sorry about the hi-jack but it was my thread anyway)..

btw.. I do have more night paddle pics to post.

Oh yeah.. To answer your question about why I was not on the Glide (on the Yarra).. Lazy I guess.. My AST was already on my car..
