Yeap.. That's the new Naish board carrier.. .. It's called the Genelle..

Actually we let Genelle go ahead on the down-winder and if she goes slow, we go slow. If she goes fast, we also go fast..

I've seen the same thing happen with road cycling..

Yesterday Jonathan and I had one of our best down-winders.. We were both on 14' Naish Glides and we had 30-40 knots of wind from the perfect direction.

Our run from St Kilda to Sandy used to take us 1 1/2 hours.. Fireman Dave and I did it in 1 hr 20 min once and that was our fastest.. Yesterday we did it in 1 hr 5 min.

So.. We have a new record to beat and I'm sure we'll be under the hour soon.. Here's a few pictures from yesterday.

Soon after heading off we were hit with a strong gust that had all the yatch masts whistling in the wind and it made an incredible sound.

Looking back towards the city before going under the St Kilda pier.

Once under the pier we looked around the breakwater and all we could see was whitecaps.. Lots and lots of beautiful whitecaps.

I only took one pic on our run and this was it.. It's Jonathan on a small runner cruising past and this was just after coming under the pier and before the real waves.

"Good stuff DJ ..... What's the distance? Did you try that experiment?"

Boylos.. It's about 15 klms.. and what experiment?

Looking forward to the Mambo.. I heard that some of the guys are going to paddle from somewhere up north about Baunda Island all the way down to Merimbula.

That'd be a good run in a good wind.

I thought you might of tryed Ekolu Kalama theroy paddling 45 degrees on the angle when on a wave instead of going straight.
That sounds like a massive paddle.... do you know how far that is?

I got the wire out yesterday in my finger ,and start light physio so hopefully I'll have some movement before Mambo!

Yeah I've been doing the 45 deg thing for a while now but usually once I'm on a runner so I don't plow into the back of the wave in front.. It works well.

The 14' Glides were flying yesterday.. I had some great runners that kept linking up and it was almost constant planing for ages.

Baunda Island is not that far.. Maybe twice as far as Merimlula to Pambula.. Piece of cake..

Glad to hear your hand's getting better.. I bet you can't wait to paddle again.. You need to win the lotto and get yourself a 10' Mana and a 14' Glide.. The perfect quiver..

- StKilda to Sandy is around 10km
- It's about 11.5km from Baunda Island to Ford Oval.
- 23km to 25km from either Boyd town, Eden or Edrom which would be good in a honking southerly.
- About 25km from Tathra to Ford Oval

I rekon this one could be good, safer for those that haven't done many downwinders:

Measured the path on Google Earth that DJ and I took yesterday - 10.7k.

The Maliko down-winder that they do on Maui is 9.5 miles or 15.2 k, Dave Kalama is within a minute or two of doing that in an hour. Maybe he doesn't fall off as many times as we do, he must be surfing almost all the way!

Ok Jonathan.. From now on it's St Kilda to Rickets.. That's got to be close to Malico run distance and let's go after Dave Kalama's time..

yep lotto would create a lot of options

Sounds like the downwinder we did last yr is just the tip of the ice berg for this yr as these heaps of interest plus bigger downwinders!
