Well after a few sessions on the flat waters of Maroochy river , noosa sound, and twin water canals, I finally found the conditions right to paddle myself and my Naish 11.6 out to the Maroochy River mouth where some of the swell was pushing in on the incoming tide. its been terribly windy here for weeks, and when it hasn't been windy, Ive been at work, but not today !

So out I paddled, across the clear blue river mouth where I sould see some small waves just managing to break. A whole foot of surf ! So it gets pretty lumpy out there, but I was feling really stable on my board, considering it was my first time on any lumpy water. The board just flew over the small waves, the waves just kinda flowed over the board easlly.

So around I turn and paddle for a wave, missed it! But the second attempt I easily got the wave and let out a woooHoo!

OK, so after that I get another wave and fall off (first fall of the board ever) and the leg rope snaps and off goes the board with the wave. So after a long swim I manage to get the board back and paddle home. Had a great time !

So after my first " surf" experience I have two questions

1 . What length leg rope? Just get the biggest?
2. Whats the best way to swim while holding a paddle? I found it awkward.

Cheers

Well done Janye we all remember our first wave , the 11-6 is a big unit so you need heavy duty Mal leg rope apx 10ft. With your paddle just throw it in front like a javlin and swim up to it an repeat or you can put it between yours legs and swim without kicking or push it under your wet shirt. If my board is washed up on the beach I just do the first one and throw because the paddle also gets caught in the wave but if my board ends up in the gutter or is close by I keep it with me.

You'll work it out just get out there and enjoy it.

creatures - outer reef 10 or 11ft...

heres a review i did on em a while back:

The big difference i have noticed,
The extra thickness.
The attachment to the rail save is fused on instead of a knot.
When u det dumped on small to med waves, the leggy feels likes it doesn't stretch half as much as normal leggys,

They claim the leggy can stretch to 3 times its original length,, on head high stuff it's hardly getting worked at all. yet to try in a BIG swell.

It feels really solid and secure , a lot of times on the old leggys i was thinking 'yep, this is going to snap then it doesn't and the board is flying to my noggin at a 100k.p.h. Or it does snap and is heading for some rocks.

should be safer for other surfers paddling out if it does't stretch as much.

they are pricey at $50, but i think that extra few dollars is a good insurance.

oy yeah forgot to mention they've got a great quick release on the velcro fastner, saved my bacon once ....very worth the 50 bux

Girlie to girlie - with the paddle use it like a pod body surfing style -

Have the blade in your hand and swim with one arm and kick this way you can still catch waves and when you are one a wave put both hands on the blade.
