Today started like every other day lately..Crappy..Cold and Windy.

After lunch I thought I'd do a paddle on the Yarra and take some pics of my new Naish Glide...and on the way to the Yarra river I stopped at some street art.

Some of it was pretty good and thought I'd get some pics of my new board next to it.

I then found some better stuff.

I thought that's enough pictures let's hit the Yarra..and as I was about to drive off something amazing happened.. The sky was blue..and there was no wind.

So... I thought stuff the Yarra.. I'm heading down to St Kilda.

It turned out a beautiful day.. The first in ages.

I hit the water about 4pm and paddled until 9pm..and only stopped because it got dark.

Helke came down after work and had a go on my Glide..and it was smiles all round.

I took about a hundred pictures of my first day on the water.. I just have to pick out half a dozen or so to post.. I'll do that soon and post a review.

All I can say now is that Naish got the name right..

I like the grafitti pics did you take them around Richmond - they look familiar. I was going to join you last night but I thought you'd probably be gone by the time I got there so I went out closer to home. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

DJ,
Got your message as I was leaving work. I would have got there too late after picking up my board from home. Maybe on the weekend. I'm getting desperate for a paddle!

D.J. I asked this question the other day and no one answered, perhaps you can? Is the Glide supposed to be a board for paddling, a board for surfing or an attempt at a combination of the two? Thanks, Stuey

stuey i think it's pretty obvious it's a paddleing board , i don't see too much surf ability it that shape unless you can see something i can't.

it does raise the question for purpose built twelve footers for racing in the twelve foot class and maybe a cheaper option for those that can't afford an unlimited board , maybe someone like yourself or dale chapman could design one that still surfs and slides like the bigger boards , i would buy something like that.

i own and race a dc16 (didn't do coffs due to injury) but quiet frankly i'm over dealing with the size of the board trying to store it around my house , i'm upgrading to one of dales new dc17 but if the twelve foot class starts to get some legs i'll be the first to race it.i think between you and dale you guys could produce an all purpose twelve footer , you both have proven the down under designers can produce the goods.

To me it looks like a board perfectly suited to most of the conditions Port Philip Bay has to offer or for some cruisy long distance paddles. That's why I think it should have come standard with a cargo pouch up the front. But let's wait and see what DJ has to say about it.

sorry DJ not to hijack your thread but to address stueys question the Glide is aimed squarely at the 12' rudderless class for racing. However it has kept some width and the flat tail and underside of the bow making it a predictable and easy board to catch runners on and get a feel for ocean paddling meaning it is not only suited to racing. As DJ also said the glide in flatwater is also a really good making it an ideal board for those who dont need a surf rocker to enjoy their local waterways. but from my very limited attempt in some choppy cruf the other day, its not well suited to surfiong like the other naish boards...

Fab who works at RPS in Melbourne told me that he had surfed the glide and was amazed at how well it surfed - it wasn't just in passing but he was raving about it. So come on DJ get into the waves and let the reports roll in! The Naish website says "flat water or even small surf" so they are being pretty cautious about its talents.

Sorry I missed that question Stuey.. I'll try and get my other pictures and review up soon.

I paddled it again today in cold/rainy/crappy conditions and took some mouth cam vid.. and I even caught a few little runners once I paddled past the end of the breakwater on my way back.

The guys at Naish think that the sport of SUP will end up 80% flat water and 20% waves... I guess we'll have to see about that but I think they could be right.

Most European countries don't have surf but plenty of lakes and rivers.. I think this may be where the Glide is aimed.

If you're not surfing why have a big round nose..soft rails..and all that tail lift that all add up to slower flat water paddling and an increase in tippyness.

I'm surprised at just how stable the Glide is..and how straight it paddles (with out the constant Yawing that most wave boards do) and it feels quick through the water.

I paddled some pretty rough water today and I'm glad they made it 30" wide.. It felt great.. Because of the curvy outline you can dip a rail and paddle wide and it turns real good..and even doing sink tail turns it feels better on this that most other boards even though the tail is pretty narrow.

To me it looks very windsurfer'ish and I don't see why it would not surf a wave ok as long as you don't catch those sharp rails near the nose.

I'm not sure you'd call it a serious race board.. The new 12'6" race boards from SIC are only 23" wide.. Yes 23".. Sheesh!..You'd want to keep your speed up to stay on the thing.

I'm sure the Glide will be a pretty good race board anyway but don't expect miracles.. I think it's the engine that makes the biggest difference most of the time when racing.

The Glide feels great paddling into chop because it seems to slice through it and there is some vibration when the nose hits chop but it's not a boy'ng..it's more of a t'wang..and doesn't bog down hitting chop both upwind and downwind.

I haven't checked out how my vids today turned out so I'll do that now.

hi guys

took the glide for a paddle late sunday evening

in the wooli river

ended up cruising to the mouth of the river and catching a few small waves inside the mouth running along the southern wall into the wave trap

ended up having a very enjoyable time as the board picked up waves with very little effort and cruised for 40m on the 6 inch screamers effortlessly...lol...

board didnt like doing cutbacks and a few times i found myself with my back foot completely off the back of deckpad trying not to nose dive and loose the board onto the breakwall(no leggie)

ive tried the 16 ft penetrator that AA has (thanks AA you legend) and the glide caught waves with a few strokes but with the penetrator all you had to do is sneeze and your on

also tried the starboard 14'8 (thanks sam you legend) the same day as the penetrator and the starboard was more stable but the penetrator was just all over it (not much wind and no swell at all)

but i had more fun on the starboard playing with the steering system as the penetrator didnt have one (spewing)

the same day i tried the starboard 12'2 and later the starboard 7'2

the 7'2 kids board at my 92kg of pure lard was a test

for 10 minutes i continuously fell off and wobbled

then finally i caught a wave and shazzam!!!!!!! it was on

it turned so tightly in the pocket and let me pull and few nice tail slides and a reo to reverse my first on a sup (thanks sam for twisting my arm to have a go)

after getting the hang of it

every other board i now ride is ultra stable incomparison

DJ, In your first post you said you were going to pick out about half a dozen or so pix and post them...you must have had trouble picking just 6. Pretty funny. Anyway good shots.

I heard that it doesn't paddle much if any faster than the 11'6". Is there any truth in this? Just curious.

Ha.. ..That was a little old Asian lady (Japanese?) and she did do a double take when she saw it..

They are not my boards lined up on the beach.. .. I also have the Naish 11'4" that I use in the waves and I will sell my 11'6" unless I keep it for my daughter and friends to use.. So my plan was a two board quiver..My 11'4" and the Glide.

It feels faster and I'm sure it is but until I paddle along side friends I wont know for sure.

Even then it's hard to tell because when I paddled alongside Casso when he was paddling the big 16' Pene and I was on my 11'6" Naish there didn't seem to be much difference.. That really surprised me but maybe I was putting more paddling effort in than him.

I think it's more about the ability to catch runners and how long you can stay on them.

Today I spent hours catching little waves/runners that were coming under the pier and I'm sure I was catching them easier and even had to slow down my padding to stay on them.

I caught those sharp rails in the nose area a couple of times early on and it wanted to turn the board sideways and try and tip me off but never did fall but I soon learned to keep the board pointed the right direction to avoid that happening.

I know exactly how much slower I am to my friend Dave (the fireman) when we do down-winders together so when we do one again I'll know for sure if it's any faster.

Nothing to do with the boards ... everything to do with the engines.

You're right Casso.. ..I didn't mean to put the Pene down by that comment but I think some people expect a bit too much from a board sometimes..You still have to paddle it.

I think two equal paddlers side by side and swapping boards every now and then is a better test because if one board is faster no matter who's on it it must be faster.

Also the fastest board might be so small it's hard to measure but even a few feet faster over a very long distance can add up to a huge difference.
