As president of the only NSW based SUP club, I have been asked by Surfing NSW to help select the NSW team for the Australian Titles (three representatives). They have given us two options:

- Go off the 2009 Snowy results (unofficially coined the unofficial NSW State Titles).
- Go off the rankings in the big SUP events over the last 12 months (Honolua, Mambo, Noosa, Malfunction, Snowy).

Which option do you guys reckon they should go with?

I can't find the results (beyond the finals) of all these five contests so if you are from NSW and were in any of the above events, could you please reply with your overall placing - in case we go for that option.

Whilst I have no real interest in SUP comps, it would seem that drawing from a larger group of results may be more representative and fairer. My recollection from posts here is that the Snowy restricted numbers and it's one Sydney comp.

Just an opinion.

Dogman is right! hard to pick from the majority of comps due to the lack of any sensible judging criteria.
Put everyones name in a hat that has competed in any of these events and draw out 3 names. Keep going until you get 3 goers.

Have a qualifing comp and let anyone enter and pick your top group from that , you guys might have a sleeper out there.

That would be the fairest, we have the first Sydney SUP club comp on August 8th.

I agree with Piros, its hard for every one to travel to allot off the comps as it isnt cheap, Run an open one in the new Sydney Sup club.

Hey Goatie, what bit don't you understand about it being on 9 August (not 8)!

I suggested this to Surfing NSW but they didn't offer it as an alternative. I think they need to make a decision earlier than that - like this week.

I think we will have to go with a tallying of rankings from all the comps. Make it the best four results from the five comps (so you can drop a bad result or a comp you didn't attend) and see who are the best three performers averaged out over the last year.

Next year is looking much better for NSW with a dedicated, two day, SUP only state titles comp! Just need to find some big sponsors who are prepared to back it.

You have also got Dane Wilson? I know he is living in QLD now but I think he is still part of Surfing NSW.

He has had a couple of good results
2009 Winter Classic 3rd
2009 QLD States 3rd
2009 NFoS 1st
2008 Snowy 2nd
2007 Honolua I think he made semi's

Noel Graham would have to be another one to look at he has competed in the last NFoS 2009 finish 6th and the malfunction 2009 and also got a 6th. Not on top but still made finals and competed against some good competition.

I was assuming that the fact that Dane went in the QLD state titles that he considers himself a Queenslander now. Hey Jodie, could you duck down to the Golden Breed shop and ask him for us? I don't think we can count the QLD state titles as a qualifying comp for the NSW rankings and the 2007 comps are out of scope for our 12 month window.

Noel is definitely in the mix.

He has been doing the comps up here so he can get some credit for NSW. Woogie is ringing him now to find out.

He got 2nd at the Snowy last year and won Noosa, this year as well as the Alex Winter Classic which was the same weekend as Snowy he placed 3rd at Alex.

Hi Casso,

Mate I dont envy your position at all. But I reckon whoever doesnt get picked will just have to understand that next year it will be more organised and this year will be more of just a trial. I spoke to Hunt and he said it will be a hard task even though they were just going to go off the snowy result which is great for me but bad for some. Keep me updated, but it should go to people who will be living in NSW.

When you say "tally of events" I've only been in 2, The snowy and the malfunction charity classic - seven miles of smiles. where I came second, can we include short board comps hahahaha. Mate Ive only been doing sup for short period of time. I dont know too many of the sup guys, so i cant even offer a who's who. But I do know Tully and co are froathing at a Qld clean sweep hahahaha

Cass,

Try giving Quiksilver a buzz about the state titles next year. They seem to be getting right into SUP... I know the had of QS NSW is well into it (had a quick chat with him today at work.. haha) also Tommy C pretty much only SUPs now... haha...

just my 2 cents anyway! haha..

brooko you are so right, used to see this guy just absolutely hook in the pocket and cutback of the foam every time- backhand, forehand, didn't matter. seen him do a backhand floater along the lip and then drop it down tail first and i'm not talking a foamie. most surfers would be more than happy to claim that one. from what i saw of the mal function he would have placed for sure
