Good waves I think a big pat on the back for the local grommets.. second last day of their school holidays and probably the best waves of the fortnight and the beach they surf everyday was taken over by one of the most hated surf craft in the water.. and they just took it in there stride and kept out of the comp area. Well done Port Stephens grommets.. (they were probably all to knackered from stealing cars last night)

Just wanted to give a quick plug cause I know a few of the guys in the comp get on seabreeze a fair bit.

Surf was pretty good for a sup event. All day we had good clean 2 to 3 foot beachies. Left and rights and not too much wind. In the semi's and final the waves backed off a little bit but still enough to have fun with. I'm super stooked to come away with the win cause the standard through out the event was pretty good and a few heats went down to the wire. The event was pretty fun and super mellow out in the line up. It was good see the overall standard has improved heaps and guys who I haven't seen or met before are more the capable of holding their own in any Sup event. The sport is growing really fast and it would be good to get more events going in the future.

The standard of the girls was pretty good as well. I few times I had to look twice as some of the girls were throwing their sup's around like blokes (no offence), it was good to see.

I think NSW will go pretty good at the Aussies. Dogman is trying to organise Pantera (heavy metal band) to play for the NSW team before our heats hahahaha

What an awesome event. Surfing NSW did a great job of putting on a very professional event and we had the best surf conditions I've ever had for a SUP comp. Head high on the sets with very workable, clean lefts and rights.

Apps and Purser crowned inaugural champions

(One Mile Beach, NSW - Saturday, 17 July 2010): History was created today as the first ever NSW Standup Paddleboard champions were crowned at the picturesque One Mile Beach.

Greeted with clear skies, light offshore winds and beautiful, clean lines, the best Paddlers in the state put on a memorable show, heralding just how far the fledging sport has come.

With approximately 50 competitors competing for prestigious state titles and the opportunity to compete at the Australian Stand Up Paddleboard Titles, held as part of the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival at Port Macquarie in August, spectators, competitors and event organisers were on tenterhooks before the opening siren.

In the Open Male division, high scores highlighted the preliminary rounds of competition as competitors pushed the limits of traditional paddleboarding.

Seeing futuristic moves infused with traditional nuances, the level of competition rose as the event widdled down to the pointy end.

However, after some amazing performances, it was Ben Apps (Woonona, NSW) who stood tallest when the smoke cleared.

Defeating Noel Graham (Lennox Head, NSW), Rodger Saunders (Minnie Waters, NSW) and Scott Downing (Woonona, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Apps found himself the first ever NSW Standup Paddleboard champion.

"I'm stoked," he said.

"To take the first ever state title is a real honour," he added after accruing a total heat score of 15.74 (out of a possible 20).

Having been an excellent junior surfer, Apps has only been riding paddleboards for approximately 18 months.

"I had no idea what they were until a year and a half ago," he admitted wryly.

"But since then the level of skill and competition has risen out of sight."

Having ridden a wave of popularity, across the globe, over the past decade, stand-up paddleboarding has etched its way firmly into the sphere of competitive and recreational surfing, culminating with this inaugural event.

The hybrid discipline, which takes inspiration from surfing, skiing, wakeboarding and skateboarding, continues to rapidly evolve and grow in popularity.

In the Open Women division it was Sondra Purser (Merewether, NSW) who led from the front to take a commanding victory over Cinde Fisher (Crescent Head, NSW), Di Clasby (Freshwater, NSW) and Melissa McManus (Woollamia, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

"I'm really honoured to have won this event," Purser said tallying an impressive 12.34 (out of a possible 20) in the final.

"I've been experimenting a lot with my equipment recently, so hopefully I can continue to improve in time for the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival."

Having finalised a superb team of stand up paddleboarders for The Country Energy Australian Surf Festival, NSW look to be in great stead for the second ever stand up paddleboard national titles.

Just wanted to add it was awesome to see new shapers doing sups. When i mean new, maybe they have been doing em for awhile and Ive just seen em for the first time. Noel's "EMEREY" looked really nice, I saw a few "PANDAS" which looked good, plus a few other models. Good to see the shortboarding industry supporting the sport.

Does anyone know who's surfing for the other states?

Yeah how good is Adam Melling. I think the result saved him from the new cut off. He surfs insane when he's on. Not bad for his rookie year. A few aussies got cut from the new tour cut off. And NG your a blue.

congrats again on the win!! the result put him up to 19th so he is safe from the cut of .this is the first time ive surfed for nsw i always had to surf for qld as a grom.
