Took this footage of a light downwind run I took on my 17' on Sunday late afternoon.

A punish into the wind but had a blast coming back home and thought I'd share for those of you wondering about the merits of a longer board on not so serious or dangerous 'downwind' paddles.

Great fitness, quality water time and so much fun on a BIG board.

nice vid. the naish 17' is one of the better boards around to paddle up wind on. you got some nice little runners. a quick tip if you like- don't look around for um, look for the troughs in front, chase and sniff for them like a dog, sometimes even back off a bit and let them develop. if you look around, you only unbalance yourself. not sure if your aware, but looking behind resulted in one fall i saw. dj's vids are a prime example of what to do. i like an 'honest' vid and i'm rapt to see you put out some vid with some dw action.

Nice one Chris.. It's great to see you out on the big 'beautiful thing'.. and thanks for the complement Lacey.. It really meant a lot to me..

I was wishing I was on my 17 today on our down-winder.. We were expecting 20 knots and got 40..

The swells were so big and far apart and the big beautiful thing would have been flying along with ease and the 14 was still fun but hard work.

Keen to learn more about when the 17' Glide comes into the zone - I've used it a fair number of times and don't seem to be as quick onnit as I am on the 14' Glide.

I find the low rockered nose of the 17' catches little bumps in front which slows me down, where as I can virtually leap over the bumps on the 14' and extend the runs by hooking up one further ahead. The 17' does seem to close the gap speedwise when it gets more windy though.

We are riding windswell and some groundswell that comes from the side but normally very little space between swells.

I also find the 14' even more of a hoot the more it blows - 40knots plus is a gas on that thing!

Thanks guys.

It's all trial by error as there is next to know one down here getting together for group downwinders or people with the experience that you have on the Goldy or Vicco (there may be but they are unknown to me and I've not seen them) so apart from watching your footage and taking tips from you, it's just nut it out by the mistakes I make.

With a surfing background, I totally agree, I look over my shoulder looking for waves to paddle on ala surfing and do not chase what's in front of me at all so that's an unreal piece of advice.

Thanks again.

Glad to see you having fun. Downwinding will be a great compliment to your surfing.

Following on from what Lacey advised you can also try focussing on the water around the middle to front part of your board. This is the water that you will learn to read to set yourself up for the runs. Nothing beats time in the ocean but if you are ever up here on the Gold Coast come and have a paddle with us and we will help you out.

when ya start steering around you get a bit peek at whats happen.also you will start to use more of your par, par- pareth- parethial vision

so what i mean, yeah i might get a gimpse of something, then i go hard for the trough, bump, lump, in the end thats the part that matters. i'm not looking for the biggest swell i can see, but something that looks like it is pushing or seems to be move water with it. wait till you get a runner that 'sucks' or half drags you along (and hang on) and you'll know what i mean. getting these is the absolute peak in dw paddling imo well it's what i try to do anyway
cheers

ps yeah mike s right, it's the whole awareness thing. when it all clicks you just feel like your in the zone

In 10-18 knots, no real harm having a quick look around the corner in a quiet/dull moment, to see if you should head left or right to catch something that might be approaching....

Hey Simon.. That's the bit that most people just don't seem to get.. IMO.. They don't approach you.. Most of the time you approach them.. Almost like bumps in the road ahead as you're driving along.. That's why there's no need to ever look back (unless you're looking for where your friends are or looking for the wind on the water.. eg white caps and dark patches).

Watch my latest vid again and check when I catch one.. then rewind a bit and go back and watch it again and you can see the waves ahead forming before I get to them.. Sometimes I will point ahead because I can see them and getting ready for it.. Sometimes they fade.. other times they're building.. they're the best ones..

DJ,

Maybe I should say, "no harm having a look back in 5-11 knots". In a gentle breeze they definitely come at you from behind... But yes, they can form underneath your feet too. And yes, the ones that good behind can fade when they get to you anyway!! That's why I call it "pigging", always looking for the nose in the trough!

Trust me DJ, I need to look behind. Kristi is fast, but the 17 is a touch faster.... Can you imagine what might happen to me if something happened to Kristi !!

i must admit, things go better when i just look ahead or every thing 180 degrees ahead. its hard to explain.as i said before- some of dj's vids from last year were unreal -like a pov of me, felt like i was paddling it myself although dj i reckon you could have a bit more of a crack at it sometimes and drop down a couple with your speed
cheers

ps surfanimals, you've got a bit of a good debate going here.as i said before, i was pleased with your vid- the sun backdrop etc- keep um coming

Have a look at that new post DJ put on about Ivan in Cape Town (Ivans Downwind Magic). Ivan is looking pretty relaxed (as always) but most of his attention is given to what is happening right in front of him. Learn that part quickly and you will shorten a long learning curve.

Now, get back out there in the ocean and have fun...

Yep, did that earlier and commented on the post along the lines of 'looking straight ahead, not behind' and 'sniffing them out' all the way.

How easy did he make that look ?

I'm so glad I posted this video as I've learnt so much from this topic - thanks guys !

You might have seen that DC has had a 16' for sale in the buy / sell section since before xmas ? I bought it from him last week as it's for a 100kg plus guy (like me) with extra width for some good outside waters action so I'm frothing to really get into this segment of SUP with your help.
