I have been enjoying the sport of SUP surfing for a little over a year and lurking on this forum for about the same amount of time. I have gotten a lot of great info from the posts on here, and from other sites like Casso's cybersup.com. Currently I ride a Naish 9'3". At 6'5" and 97kg it was a challenge in the begining, especially since I had only been stand up paddling for approx 2 months on an 11' NSP before switching to the Naish. Now that I can surf the 9'3" comfortably in most conditions I feel it is time for a new challenge. I am intrigued by the new Naish 8'4", but at my size I wonder if it will float me. Has anyone similar to my weight had a go on this board? Actually, advice from anyone who has had some time on this board would be appreciated. I am also open to suggestions of other boards that I should consider for SUP surfing that would provide a challenge along with the reward of shortboard like surfing.

Yeah.. I also say try the 8'10".. ..It's very different to the 9'3".

Lumers said that the new 8'4" only just floats him and a lot of the board is under water.. and he's about 87kgs.

JB makes it look floatier than that in his vid.. I guess a demo is the only way to know for sure.

what type of conditions do you expect to spend most of your time in? at your weight i would say the 8'10. even that can be tricky in poor conditions. a guy i know, who i would consider right up there with best in oz, was telling me he still falls of in poor conditions, but is prepared to accept that and have the great surfing ability of the naish 8'10
cheers

Thanks for the feedback. My local conditions this time of year are offshore chest to head high, but most of the year is onshore wind swell waist to overhead and somewhat mushy. I guess a demo is the way to go. Any other short board like sups out there besides Naish that any of you would recommend for my weight?

SurfsSUP,

I am so close to boarder line on the 8'4", that I would imagine the extra 2-3 kgs would make it a bit of a struggle. However you would definitely love it on the waves, but paddling out will be a bit of a challenge. As said previously, go for a demo. I'd take both the 8'10" and the 8'4", you'll love em both and they have an awesome ride. The vid of me in the other post, you'll notice I can't really stop for long, and the tail of the board is always under water. It's not so different on the 8'10" but that extra half an inch or so of width does make a difference. I would be interested in hearing your experience after demo'ing both, so please post if you get the opportunity.

Enjoy,

JB

I had a go on my new 8'4" today. Flat water conditions since there was no surf Very suprised how stable it felt. Being 97kg, it sits a good bit lower in the water than my 9'3", but no worries while paddling. Didn't even fall once. I can't wait until we have some nice offshore surf. It should be a blast. I expect it to be a challenge in choppy conditions since it will be easy to sink the nose. I might have to drop a few kgs to get proficient when it is like that. Next post...surf report. <\><

I have just taken delivery of the little 8"4, and leave for the Maldives on Saturday...other guys are bringing the 8"10 and JL Mano. I will give a full report of the new weapon in a few weeks.
