I tried the Naish 9'6" and didn't like it at all. Now the flavour of the month is the PSH 9'6" WAA.

The buzz on the Naish died off long ago but the PSH is certainly very popular at the moment and the claims are a lot stronger and more positive than those for the Naish.

Both boards are roughly the same dimensions and roughly the same shape in terms of the wide nose etc.

Is the PSH radically different to the Naish?

I found the Naish slightly more tippy than the PSH and I think it's due to the rail shape on the Naish.

Hi Gorgo,

I have tried both boards and own a 9'6WAA. I found the PSH had , more primary stablility and had significantly more float and at 105kg this was important. The PSH dosent lack in performance either by any stretch.

It works well in both big and small waves and is easy to throw around with the right fin set. I have 5 different set ups you can try.

You are more than welcome to demo my board if you wish.

Phill Small Slop at OG

As you can see in the pics even with my wide A$$ and 105kg in 6 inch no push dribblers the board still works well. In OH and ++ it rips mmmmmmmm

Don't write off the Naish 9'6 just because it's no longer flavour of the month. How long did you try it for Gorgo? I also came off a Starboard 11'2 onto the Naish 9'6 and at first I really thought I'd bought the wrong board, took me at least 6 or 8 two or three hour sessions to get it dialled in. What initially felt hard to trim for catching waves eventually became second nature, the 9'6 is a fantastic board but for me was just too big for 67kg when I was surfing it. I think you need to be very experienced to be able to jump on a board and "understand" how it performs straight away.

Hey Jonanthon,

At 67kg any 9'6 would have significant volume and glide, even my 7.2 starboard would be an easy ride.

I doubt there would be too many male suppers that would fit your weight class as most of us have been grazing in too green a padock laughs!

Its all about horses for courses.

Thats where the challenge begins.

I did an hour of flat water paddling in chop and a long weekend in the surf on the Naish. Probably 6 hours total on water time. I could paddle it ok and surf it ok but waiting for waves was horrible. I don't really like the aesthetics of the Naish boards (except for the Glide).

Hey OG are you a dealer are just super keen? Thanks for the offer of a demo. I've lined up a demo of a PSH and I'm just working out my toy budget for the coming play season.

Hey Gorgo,

I got burned badly when I first started surfing by a supplier who didnt have a clue and I have seen several people recently sold boards that dont go even close to suiting them.

Thats why I set up the OG demo day so people could try what ever they wanted and compare before they bought. What suites you may not suite someone else.

You wanted o try a 9'6, I have one.

Its that simple happy to share the stoke on that board!

I am a self confessed PSH Board Pig they suit the way I like to surf and I make no bones about that lol.

so ... how does the 9.6 waa surf, more short boardy or more like a longboard? my pal has a c4 sub vector that doesn't suit my style at all -- too much like trying to ride a short board. my main ride (at the moment) is a 10.5 starboard, which is all about cruising and crosstepping and is perfectly suited to me. at the same time, i wouldn't mind owning something that rides similarly but in a shorter overall package. and i'd like to try something other than starboard. so, i'm thinking, 9.6 waa. think it'd fit the general bill?

Gorgo what did you not like about the 9 6" naish? what sort of waves were you in and how much do you weigh?
I have had the 9 6" naish for nearly a year and surf it regular in the waves pitcured below, and also summer 2 ft dribble, I have changed the fins to fcs sf 3s . I have caught set waves in 6 ft plus waves on this board, waves that get the heart pumping on a 7ft Maurice cole pintail, waves that a year ago i didnt think possible to ride on a sub, this board excelled, it is with out a doubt, a shredder, I will always have one as part of my quiver, stable (but yet nimble) catchs waves like an 11 6" kalama, rails cutbacks like a 6 8" super light and mega strong, I have tried heaps of boards and this is easily in the top 2. just my 2c worth.

The problem I have with short SUPs is they are too sensitive to chop. Paddling straight is fine and catching waves and stuff is all fine but hanging around in onshore slop waiting for waves is hard work and I miss too many waves from falling off during the turn.

This is exactly what happened with the Naish 9'6" in onshore slop. A set would come and halfway through the turn I would fall off and miss the set.

The Naish was fine on the waves and would be fine in good conditions. In crappy onshore conditions it was not fine. I missed waves and had no fun.

I took the PSH 9'6" Wide AA out for a paddle today and it felt very similar to the Naish. Just way too hard to stay on in chop. On flat water it was fine but add chop and it all gets way too hard.

I also took the PSH 10'6" AA (not the wide one) out for a paddle. It was significantly better than the 9'6" in chop but still not as good other longer boards I have tried.

Just to be a pig I finished my board orgy on the Glide and it was nice.

The whole SUP thing for me is being able to hit the water no matter what the conditions. Often I have to surf onshore slop and the shorter SUPS I have tried are too hard in those conditions.

BTW. Both 9'6" boards had deck pads with those platforms for your feet. I don't think they help. They restrict my foot position and feel really uncomfortable underfoot.

Hey Gorgo,

I'm with you. I have the Naish 9'6 and my experience is almost identical to yours. I'm so glad you posted because there have been a lot of posts saying how stable the board is and I'm thinking I must be super kook. The board is a great surfer can't fault it there, but as soon as the wind comes up I'm not having fun anymore. I also have the Creatures grip with raised edges and don't like it for the same reason as you. I think if I could get my feet a bit wider it might help. If it helps your board search at all, I now also have a 10' x 30 surfshapes and find it surfs pretty similar to the Naish but is heaps more stable. I couldn't see my self going smaller than this in the near future.

Thanks Thomo

Just for the record, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the 9'6" boards. They're perfect for the purpose for which they are intended ... surfing waves in decent conditions. They also paddle fine in flat water with no chop.

It's just that when you add chop they become too tippy for my skill level. On my 11'2 and other 11'+ boards I have tried I can handle anything I encounter but the sub-10' boards have been too hard.

Apparently a demo 10'6" Wide AA will be available and there's a whole heap of new boards becoming available for us to try.

The Whopper and the 10'5" are on my list to check out. I like how the Starboard range comes completely sorted with deck pads and stuff fully installed.

Some new Naish boards are also in the pipeline and I want to talk to some local shapers. If I can demo their boards and the price is right then that could be a good option.

I freely admit to being a kook but on my 11'2" I can do anything I want with ease. So as long as I work within my limitations I'll be a happy SUPper.

You've been doing it for long enough and have obviously thought about stepping to a new board for a while now. You know exactly what you want from a board - therefore, I'd highly recommend you take the plunge and get a locally shaped board, to your own specifications. I'd be very surprised if it ended up costing more than a popout.

I've had my custom board for almost a year now and couldn't be happier. I'm now committed to ordering another bigger purpose built board from them.

Hey Firstpoint,

Say hi to Annie for us, I am still blown away by how few people outside the longboard community know about Dave Boyd "Imperial Surfboards"

At the last Vicco Longboard Titles he made 75%+ of all the boards surfed. He also designs all the SUP shapes sold by another company as you are aware.

Dave rips on a SUP and Kristi and Nesha's SUPs speak for themselves.

We have been asked to sell both Kristi's and Nesha's boards, neva gonna happen!

Phill

The Blank when it was finished being shaped, check out the smile!

Kristi loves the board again check out the smile!

Hmm does it work?? What do you think!

Nesha havin fun!

As a PSH WAA9.6 rider I couldn't agree more. At 6'3 I find it is an awesome performer in good conditions but get thrown off a lot in side chop (just as a big set approaches of course!).I think it's a centre of gravity thing combined with a lot of volume in the middle of the board.
There are some informative C4 Sub Vec posts on Standup zone that address this issue written by bigger guys. The concave deck is not a gimmick apparently.I will demo a 9.3 sub vec next week.
