After maybe 5 sessions (mainly flat water paddling) the grip started peeling around the handle. I used some strong glue and stuck it back down. After this the center strip and main area started peeling up and I siliconed these areas with bead around all edges for good measure. Now the edges are peeling up and the siliconed areas are lifting.

Its a bit of a mess now and I'm not sure which way to move forward. Its very frustrating this is the last thing I want to be thinking about when I go for a paddle. It just gets worse each time I go out.

Is this the Naish pad? What do you guys recommend I do?

Thanks DJ,

I may try this stuff but I'm not sure if I'm passed this stage as I have some large areas lifting now...

I'd be using contact cement -- it's ideal for this type of repair.

Make sure both materials are clean, wipe them off with metho or similar. Peel all the bits of silicone and glue off as well. Don't be scared to pull more of the pad off if it lets you get more access to it. If the original adhesion is bad enough to let you pull the pad off then you're better off pulling it all off now and starting again, rather than letting it pull off later and making you redo it. Also take your time getting all the bits of old glue off, you want the contact cement to stick the pad and the deck together, not bits of silicone to other old bits of glue that will just peel apart.

Put contact cement on both the deck and the pad, wait 5-10 minutes, then align it carefully and stick it down. You only get one chance at lining it up, contact cement will stick like $h!t to the proverbial blanket so make sure it's in the right spot.

I wouldn't be using silicone unless the delamination is very localised and you can't keep the two bits apart well (to let the contact cement dry). Contact cement is something like ten times stronger than silicone, if you do a good job then the foam pad will rip apart before the glue comes undone.

I think this is the case...

If the original pad is no good after pulling off what is the best pad to buy?

I just removed the whole deck. It came way too easy, the middle strip was the only piece not to come off in 1 whole piece it took less than 5mins!!! All that was left on the board is silicone that i used. I'm going to clean it up and put a tail pad + front pad (not naish). Thinking C4 not sure can anyone recommend? Cheers.

That's criminal. I can't believe that a company would do such a bad job gluing it down! Maybe the beancounters have too much influence or something.

Anyway modern glues are awesome, pick the right one and it will last longer than your board

I kind of liked this effect, you could cut up naish deck pad to save yourself the cost of getting another one. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=40837

You would find that the only board that Naish glue the grip down on is the 11'6 AST otherwise you have to do it your self or the shop might do it for you. The Naish grip is a really good grip and the key to any grip sticking is the preparation even on new boards!!

With the Naish boards and grip the 11'6 and 11'4 the grip fit straight on no cutting required with the 10'6 the middle piece is not needed and the 9'6 i just cut the middle piece in half. If you do this you will find that the grip won't over hang the edges and will stick much better on the raised up parts. When cutting the handle out don't leave any over hanging pieces for the water to get under.

Another good grip is the creatures one.

same thing happened with my naish 9'6 i used araldite for the flat bits and automotive black silicone to fill the raised edges before gluing them down. i also got some light grade sand paper and sanded the gloss fiinish back a little so the glue had something to bond to. contact adhesive (kwick grip) is great for sticking down small flat spots but if the area is large and you have to move it to get it in position your stuffed, i spent a few hours cleaning the glue off and starting again!!!

Welcome to the Breeze shimmyshazbo.

How are you liking the 9'6"..and how heavy are you (if you don't mind me asking).

You're right about the contact adhesive.. It's great stuff untill you get it wrong..

I hope that Naish start doing all their boards with the grip already on..Like the new AST.

i weigh 74 kg and im luvin the 9'6 i was riding a 10' oxbow but got bored with it pretty quickly, the 9'6 is heaps more stable in the choppy stuff (the oxbow was only 27" wide) and it turns way better, even manage the odd foam climb/reo on it too. (if what you do on a sup is called a reo???)
