Okay i am really keen to get myself a SUP. BUT what to get so i thought I'd ask the experts.

The uses will be for a good bit of fitness but also for playing and having fun. I am around 5'11" but just over 100kilos. I already surf but looking for some fun on small waves. Also want to use it of my big boat at Rottnest and hopefully out at transit.

I like the idea of small and compact but what size should i really be going for. I'll never use it over 2 to 3 feet (i think).

I'm worried about them on the boat for storage and also damage lifting on and off. SO what about the inflatable boards? Also my kids will play with it so nothing too exotic..Not yet anyway..

Mate - sounds like a C4 inflatable ISUP would be the ideal board for your needs. I reckon at your size a 10.0 or 10.6 would be more than enough board. They are very compact when de-flated and fit into their own backpack which also fits the included pump and repair kit. When inflated (takes 2mins) they are very rigid and tough as nails and super light to carry. They are fantastic fun and very safe for the whole family and you dont have to worry about kids falling onto it or having it fall on them and getting hurt.

i agree bout the inflatable SUP but pump one up a few times before you buy one just to see if it would bug you. super convenient and the kids cant kill them.

i probably look at an old starboard round 10ft also cause they are durable and full deck grip for riding with the kids.

A mana "small and compact" - JEEZ he wouldn't be putting the mana on his boat - he'd be putting his boat on the mana

Leaning toward the Starboard Whooper..Any thoughts.

I also saw a product called rail guard. That would be ideal for protecting gunnel's when tied up next to bow rails? Has any one any ideas or info?

Thanks Again..

I agree with DJ on this choice due to soft top for kids is important for safety reasons. Also volume is around 210 litres which will float your weight well.
I would'nt go shorter then 10ft. I think they have hardened plastic fins which is safer with the kids.

I'm no expert but I am the same height and weight as you and have a C4 10ft XXL ISUP. My 8 year old loves it and I agree its a good kids board as light, soft and stable. it paddles ok on flat water but isnt a great surfer. Also the C4's dont have tie down rings, but I guess you could glue some on. it is also pretty indestructable, I reckon an EPS board would get knocked around getting on/off the boat. ISUP is also way lighter. Have fun with whatever you get anyhow.... you'll probably end up wanting a couple so they can all play on them!

just wanted to throw in my two bob on isup, and ask a question in return

personally, love having the C4 (10ft) and paddle in the car at all times through summer, and have used on river, inlets and ocean for some fun paddles
agree it doesn't ride waves well, but i have still enjoyed throwing it around for a laugh when waves are tiny (i surf a short board as soon as it is big enough)
easy to store, relatively easy to pump up to 12 psi and user friendly for all rookies and kids new to SUP

i have had an issue with my pump though, with first the bayonet clip breaking (which i have replaced myself and it works fine) and then the pump itself packing it in. i have tried to chase up a replacement pump, but it is really hard to get just a pump without buying the full board (ie they sell board with pumps as a package seemingly everywhere)
reckon i should just go for a pump for inflating dinghy's etc from a yacht store, or is it worth trying to get the valves sorted and pump fixed at a shop, or do C4 stockists in perth have extras for sale - and i just haven't been in the right store?

any help is appreciated
cheers

I'm not 100% of the inflatable board yet. But do want to see one. I think they would make a good starter as the kids will then inherit it as i move up to a better board. But were can you see them in Perth. I know the guy from ULI is coming over for Mandurah but is there anyone who has them in shop in Perth.

Thanks Guys.

As for the pump the guys at Combined Marine in Joondalup (just up the road from me) 9300 3100 have electric pumps that they use and sell. The owners are big into surf life saving and IRB racing so they know there stuff as well. Not sure if that helps..

hi rod

in my hunt around for pumps i came across main peak in osborne park who sell the C4's in different sizes, and had them at 35% off at the time i think?! u could check on their website if that is still the case, or see if the store up joondie way has em

maybe a surf shop retailer might pipe up here if they have em for demo, otherwise one kite and SUP store in rockingham said they could order inflatable boards in by request, but didn't have them to look at

cheers
