Since my last post about an SUP specific designed leach .. ( www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=53118 ) .. I've just received a couple of custom made leggies from Balin.. and yesterday I got to try it out for the first time and I took some pictures.

I'm just about to head off right now to do a down-winder (it's blowing 20 knots from the North) so these are just my pictures.. I'll post some comments later.

Anyone wanting to join us today (sat 25/7) are welcome.. We're paddling from St Kilda to Sandy with a starting off time of 11am at St Kilda.

Tail saver looks longer but the photo angle might be the reason.
DJ, how thick can they go with the leggie? 7mm, 8mm, 9mm??

I would like to get a super thick/strong 9fter for big waves. Would they do custom for anyone?

Also DJ, is a regular leggie or a knee leggie?

Tech specs for you guys.

Strap can be either Ankle or Knee type both used for longboard surfing. The Tail saver attachment is our standard surfboard attachment which allows it to tie off pretty close to the plug.

We used a 2mtr. x 7.4mm urethane coil with an extra 1mtr. straight section. 2 x swivels to help the coil work properly. You should note it is not possible to make a coil that will retain it's "as new" snap. The harder the grade of urethane gets the less it will stretch. In theory though they will return to shape if re-heated to say around 180degC. Be careful coz it goes from solid to liquid without warning.

The idea is to have length for strength. IE if you have enough length and stretch hopefully the long stretch will allow these battle ships you guys ride to absorb the force that a wave will impart on the board, stretching it out until the wave force dissipates. We believe this is the key to "strength".

The coil is at the Knee end so that it is up and out of the way. It's all about keeping the length out of the water.

We do have some 9mm material and have made some protos for testing but haven't heard back from them as yet. We don't have mouldings to go with the 9mm so they have to be hand tied - which is OK but ugly.

We can supply your favoutite retailer if they order but as yet we havn't comitted to builidng stocks. So the design may change a little. I've just set the retail at $59.95 (urethane isn't cheap)

No.. They're not just prototypes.. Any one selling Balin products (most surf shops) can just order one and it should just take a few days.

I like the idea of a coil leash and DaKine make a good one but if you happen to step back and on it it would feel huge under your foot and maybe cause you to fall.

These have all the coils hanging and the only bit that you can step on (if you did) would be the flat bit and not cause any problems.

It's great to be able to carry your board in and out of the water without the risk of tripping on your leggie..

That's gotta be one of the most embarrassing things to do.. and I've done it a few times..

Also.. Their rail-saver and rope combo is brilliant.. .. IMO

just curious,this is a good idea but why do you need a 10.0 leash on a down winder,surely a shorter leash even in this design would not drag in the water at all.this at 10.0 will still drag

Doh' Sorry i took that as being the leggy and rail tape.

The leggy is a great idea dj and even better i guess if you have a fish tail.
