A few days ago Dave offered to teach me how to paddle my OC-1, I've been complaining how much I suck at it. After watching me for a few minutes he agreed that I really sucked at it and showed me what I was doing wrong. He started off with a simple little drill that made all the rest of his instruction much simpler.

I said "you've got to write a post about this. If you do I'll shoot and edit a video of it". So he did, and I did.

Here's the deal. Read the post, watch the video, and GO DO THE DRILL. You get nothing from just reading it or watching. You'll all be convinced that he's absolutely right, but nothing will happen to your stroke.

You have to do the drill.

I spent a morning fooling around with it and practicing, and my OC paddling has popped up so briskly that I'm thinking of doing a the remaining MCKC race in my boat.

Dave said it's like riding a bicycle--people can tell you what to do, you can watch people ride, but have to let your body get the experience or you'll never ride.

Bill you're so lucky to have someone of such high standing and acclaim to tell you how much you suck. All I have is DJ, who is unfortunately too nice a guy to even tell the Earl of Suck from Suckingham Palace that he sucked.

Love this post, so many bits of inspiration in all of his site.

I am looking forward to the thoughts of people on the forum regarding this, I hear a lot of people talking about twist and reach and how it does not apply to SUP.

Great post again Sir Kalama: perhaps he should be knighted for services to paddling?

CMC,
Regarding your last post;
Yes, yes, yes, and yes!

---------
The last half of the stroke is certainly the "tea bag stroke".... no power there....
I'm keen to try 50/50. I also want to try 25/50/25. Try and see how a Mid 50% compares to Front 50%.

Yeah, thanks. Suckingham palace. I like that. Hopefully someday soon I won't suck quite so badly, though it seems that if you suck at all, well... ...you suck.

I think twist and reach relates to almost everything, except maybe picking your nose. Oh wait, it relates to that too.

Too much rotation/twist without bending forward on a Sup will roll the board onto it's rail , Daves technique is a nice combo of different styles , you need to make sure that when you fatigue that you are still pushing the front arm out and not bending over more to make the mark.

Great example of how to break up the stroke , definetly be giving it a go
