i know they say if you dont have something nice to say - dont say anything at all.... but i just couldnt help myself
As a trailer its pretty random - no real idea given of the documentary story, use of imovie templates and confusing shot selection / random timelapses just for the sake of it.
I had a look at their Vimeo page - "Silvey Huffaker Creative" - impressive sounding name but based on the 4 videos they have up there -their work is at a pretty basic level
interesting claim to work in association with DJI (they make Quad / Hexacopters and camera stabilising equipment- i doubt it . looking at the quality of the aerial shots they wouldnt want to be associated with such an amateur effort. Those were seriously average aerial shots compared to what can be done with a relatively minor investment in gear - at least use a gimbal if you are claiming to work with DJI.
Or just slow mo the clips to hide the wobble.
I do have high hopes that they manage to pull this doco off - as the sport deserves some quality story telling but initial impressions are not good!
I viewed it a few minutes after is was posted and to be honest I thought the above. I hope the trailer is not a reflection of the doco. A 90 mile,24hr,1 man paddle needs something.
Looks like they're paddling from Cuba to the US, and they've got a quadcopter to play with. Google "Ninety North SUP" (and curse Laurie for blocking urls in posts grrrr).
We definitely agree that there are things we would have liked to have done better. For one, the gimbal system for our main copter malfunctioned while on the sailboat. We had to resort to filming with our backup drone that DJI sent us as a last resort option. The fixed mounting point with no vibe reduction is not optimal. But hey, it's better than nothing.
Our friend Ben, the paddler, had a film crew that he had hired to go to Cuba with him. The OFAC license that the USA issued Ben went through at an inopportune time and the film crew couldn't make the short time frame for departure. Ben called Silvey Huffaker Creative 6 days before his departure to Cuba. As you can imagine, these sort of filming projects take a long time to plan for. Needless to say, we did the best we could with the time that was given to us.
With more curve balls that you can image, the "storyboard" changed many times. We hope to produce a video short that will tell the story we experienced while involved with this great international event. Cuba really is an amazing place, and the people we met along the way were even more amazing.
We are looking to release the video short during the Lookout Wild Film Festival in Chattanooga, TN in March of 2014. Hopefully it won't suck so bad...
