Had to shift some funds around and sell some shares but finally got my new Starboard 12'6 Sportech Pin over the weekend.

Unfortunelty I had the City to Surf 12km run on Sunday so could only take her out for a short paddle but boy am I excited.

The Sportech construction on this board is beautiful and the wood grain is awesome. Cuts through wind chop like a knife through butter. Very good for going up wind and when you turn around she flies.

I need to install more board holders now

I love the displacment type front on the board

I could only take a couple of her on the roof of my surf car so you dont see the full beauty of her but will take some better photos when i take her out again.

Wow!!... She's a beauty.. Congrats..

I'm sure that next year Naish will have a displacement type board like this in their range.. They'll have to to keep up with Starboard..

What's the fin shape like.. and does it have a mid mounted fin as well?

The fin that came with the board is similar to most other downwind boards i have seen around just straight and about 9 inches (sorry dont know the lingo for it).

I have put a bigger fin on 10 -11 inches just helps it track straighter.

There is no mid mounted fin.

I was humming and harning about whether to wait for the naish 14 like you DJ. Eagerly awaiting your review and pics of the board.

cheers

haha ya it is thats my surf car and has about 370,000km on the clock and have never had a problem with the car.

The board is about 2 feet longer than the car. Luckly no problem from the cops yet but might have to hang a red rag and the tail end for saftey reasons when driving.

Congrats. Not much beats picking up a new board. The sportech finish sure does look the business in the Starboard range and looks excellent on your pin.

Nice racks, are they home made or shop made? You got a pic with out the board on there.

Mainly of the brackets.

BP they are store bought racks used for kayaks, Aqua Racks .

Got them from a Katmandu store about $120.

will take some photos when i get home but here are some from a website http://www.canoeingdownunder.com.au/imageWindow.php?ProdID=485

Cheers, I was trying to see if the padding is protecting your while board reather than sitting up against the bolts.

Im going to make some sets.

At the moment it is just resting against the plastic covers of the bolts, I am going to get some foam and cover that side when i bolt the other set on for the Pin.

Good luck.

Hey Zimbo,

How is the 12'6 Pin going for you? I've just ordered the Tuffskin and I'm hanging out to get it. The down-winder ability is what I'm really curious about.

In a word great, I took it out the other day in 25knot conditions for a 7km paddle on the river and caught some great runners.

What I really like about this board is the nose, it cuts through chop sooo well

On river downwinders the runners are a closer wavelenght and steeper face (allbeit smaller in height) to open ocean, so the nose on other boards tend to pearl and sink into the wave in front and loss control. On the pin it just slices straight through and is very easy to control when you are on the runner.

Still experimenting with my positioning on the board though.

Gday Zimbo,
I demod a Pin over the weekend and did a downwider from EFYC to Deep water point on Saturday morning. Your right about the nose of the board. A couple of times I had a fair bit of water across the front and the nose just lifted everytime without any noticable loss of speed.
I did find that the front of the board swings a bit when your hit by a breeze from side on due to its height.
Have you experimented with different fins or are you using the one that was supplied?
Certainly worlds apart from doing downwinders on a 11'2.

You are right about the front of the baord and cross winds. I tried stepping forward on the board about a foot to sink the front more when I was paddling across the wind direction. By sinking the front it acts more like a displacement hull and does not catch so much side wind. Although I dont think it generates the most speed from the board it does help with the yawning with cross winds.

I am using a large nose riding long board fin but want to get a bigger downwinder fin. I dont think the standard one that comes with the board is big enough for my liking.

I am debating between these two, one is a 12 inch the other 13, they are magic weed fins

What are you trying to achieve with the fin change?

Good question DJ, one which I do not entirely know the answer to .

A bit of experimentation seeing if the bigger fin will reduce yawn mainly.

Although stability is not an issue for me, a friend of mine who paddles with me and does not have a board of his own finds it hard to balance on pretty much any board as he is 6'2 110 kg so I thought the bigger fin might add some stability for him as well when he paddles the pin.

Would appreciate any of your thoughts on the issue of fins on downwind boards

Could you let us know how you go with the different fins Zimbo.
Have you been out on the ocean for a downwinder with the Pin yet as I havent heard of any reports for it on open water with swell and chop.
Cheers
