Here's my new board or as DJ calls it: a kneel-down-stand-up paddle board. 8'3" x 27' x 4.75". Flotation and stability are the big challenges. But it should surf OK I think. Let you know how it goes.

Looks like a great board Logman.

It appears to be a big double concave similar to Rods style of boards, but with a little less rocker.

Did you shape it yourself?

We had a look at a couple of LSDs boards today and they are so light I would say 1/3 the weight of a PSH and the shapes rip.

Yeah Phil , just me and an electric planer . I wanted to keep it fairly flat rockered as the previous one had maybe to much and needed a good size wave to get it going . It's a bit embarrassing to post pictures of my boards knowing that guys like LSD and Rod Hocker and many board makers must be cacking their guts up looking at my effort but it's a great feeling catching your first wave on a home made board . The previous board 9'6x 29x 4 is great but I wanted to see if I could surf a smaller length and width board and compensate with more thickness . I took it for a prone surf after it had just been glassed and the difference between 9'6 and 8' 3 is huge . Very turny very sinky ,slow to catch a wave but accelerates very fast once you've got it . I use a double paddle and I think I'm gunna need it for balance and for paddling into the wave . anyhow I hope I can get to use the more surfy nature of it .

Logman,

I have found both Rod and LSD are very generous with their time and have helped all sorts of people out.

I believe they would be wrapped to see you have a go!

I love the sunken deck, the step rail and the plane shape looks like a lot of thought
has gone into it for sure.

I saw one of lsds boards today think its about 7'8 x 30 x 4. It weighed almost nothing should have blown off the beach. It would be so bouyant and it easily floated his son who is not light weight.

His designs have really opened up new ground.

Its fantastic to see everyone pushing the boundaries!

Exciting times

I could imagine how hard it it is to post pics of your home made board on the forum. Well done - I would one day love to surf a board I made myself. I think it looks great.

Now about that thick yellow deckgrip - is that the floor to some cubby house or did you get it at Ikea?

Nice job! I am playing with the idea myself of making a board.

Yeah Phill, the weight of LSD's boards is ridiculous! Soooo light.
I hope to get a few tips off Dean before I switch the plane on. I have been messing around shaping rails and tail shapes on some left over bits of EPS I picked up from a local manufacturer. It's pretty addictive and I can't wait to get in the shaping shed.

Hey Logman, what is the glass lay-up you are using?
What weight is ya new board?

Bnaccas , the layup is 2x6oz bottom with a patch around the fin and 2x6oz plus deck pad patch ---6 oz also but feeling how strong it is I recon the next could easily be say 1x6 plus 1x4 on the bottom 2x6 on the top . it's pretty basic just eps medium grade and no vacuum bagging but i'm not a good enough surfer to notice different weight except carrying it to the car . Total weight , I don't know for sure but much lighter than the previous board maybe 9 kg . yeah LSD's boards are great ,I've only seen them on this site but I recon he's got 50 people in that shed, every time I look at his posts he's got a new board out front . Oh yeah Oliver that deck pad . I got the idea from Sam Pa'e ( i think thats how it's spelt ) over at Standupzone . There just those interlocking yoga mats . they work pretty good ,there EVA foam , 5 bucks each and super comfy to kneel and paddle . He uses the ones with Thomas the tank engine and Wiggles prints on them but that's going too far . Cheers
