Was your last sup purchase new or second hand ?
What was your reason for whichever option you took ?

PLEASE - NO BRANDS OR SHOPS OR SHAPERS - JUST YOUR PURCHASING DECISION

My last purchase was new because it was an old runout model going cheap.

Second hand because I wasn't sure it was going to be a keeper - and it won't cost me much if I decide to resell. I'd buy new for a definite keeper.

Second hands fine with me. It's not like a board has moving parts like a car that can be thrashed. Any damage is usually obvious and largely superficial and if you don't like it you can usually shift it without losing any money and possibly even pick up a few bucks

Surf SUP only:

First one new, no choice. No such thing as second hand then.

2nd second hand exact same I was going to order.

3rd second hand, rode board and friend insisted I buy it.

Next board new custom, exact same as #3 with 20 more litres.

As above nothing wrong with 2nd hand at all to save some coin.

My first board was brand new same as cmc had no option, rest of my purchases so far have been second hand as money is the issue, but when i find something i like i'm going to buy it brand new or get someone to tweak it to suit my style of paddling.

I know that we on seabreeze are probably only the tiniest percentage of sup buyers in this country but from what you are saying and from what I hear most people are buying either second hand or the cheaper "no name" imports at the moment.
In your own opinions, at what price does a new board become a viable option when you are comparing it to a second hand one ?
I know from being around the industry for a while that $1800 (ish) is probably what a premium sup is worth, when compared I guess to a shortboard or mal, when you take into account the extra time and materials that go into it BUT I am also acutely aware that very few people are prepared to part with that sort of money for a sup nowdays and its a sh#t load of money to outlay in most peoples books - mine included.
So do you think that new premium brand sups are too expensive in general or can you just not afford one.

I do not want this to get into a brand vs brand or import vs local or premium vs cheapo thread - I just want to get some honest thoughts about what we are buying and whether our buying habits are based on what we want or what we can afford overall.

Its common knowledge that I have some ties to a particular retailer, and I do obviously support the brands that that retailer stocks but I still pay for my boards and I do primarily buy on price and I mainly buy 2nd hand or run out cheaper old models cos thats all I can afford.

Ideally I guess I would like to see us all being able to afford the latest u-beaut shiny sup models and updating to those new models every year and as such creating a really affordable and varied second hand market for those just coming into the sport, or on a tight budget or the person requiring a bit of a quiver without having to mortgage the house to do it. I sure as hell don't have the answers but I think someone needs to seriously look at what/why and how we are buying sups in order to make it more affordable for the customer to be riding quality boards and still profitable for the shapers, retailers and importers.

I bought new for my first and second boards (although number 2 was damaged in the shop so a sizeable discount was on offer) as well as a new one for the Girlfriend and my son. Having said all that there is nothing wrong with a second hand one either. My sailboards are both second hand and they are spotless. Recycle Reuse I say.

my first board was new but it was a cheapy and cost me like $800 with everything,
for my second board i got a new custom made board, i only got this cause it was $400 cheaper than the board i was gonna get, im considering getting a new board when i have the cash, there are some good looking boards in the buy and sell at a very good price that i would consider buying, i would have no problem buying a second hand board.

I think the whole "new or second hand" thing is a kind of red herring.....probably the real question
is...."why do we always want another board?"

Bill, you may be interested in this. I have been working voluntarily in the formation of a group called ASCIA. That is the Australian Surf Craft Industry Association. ASCIA will represent all surf craft (surfboards, SUP, clubbie boards, ski's, outriggers etc etc) manufacturers, retailers and materials suppliers.

ASCIA has been formed as a not for profit industry association much like the Master Plumbers Association etc. Some of its main objectives are to:

-Create formal qualifications, training standards and career pathways for manufacturers to encourage workers to join the industry. We are already working with TAFE who will very soon be offering hands on Skillset training for those interested in working in this industry. Employers are already interested, there are real staff shortages, this is the first step to start filling the gaps.
-Conduct market research to guide and assist manufacturers. We are about to launch a professional survey along the lines of what you are asking here very soon. Planning to go with Coastal Watch, Swellnet and with all industry sites that are offering space for free for something they see as supporting the backbone of the entire industry. I may have to hit up Laurie
- Form strategic alliances with service suppliers and complimentary industries.
- Promote the Australian industry both within Australia and Internationally.

There is much more to explain and happening. It is already backed and funded by local, state and Federal government. A website is being built kindly with funds from the Gold Coast City Council via Connecting Southern Gold Coast.

I know you are interested in this stuff and your question prompted me to let you know. If you want any more info PM me. There will be a multitude of media on this very soon.

P.S This may explain my real bias towards riding Aussie boards.

P.S.S ASCIA is not anti Asian as some may instantly believe.

i've had a couple of new boards

most of the new ones are dw boards. there's been so much advancement in this area of sups.

however i'm getting a secondhand surf sup. it would be a year old from the released date of that model. i don't reckon there is to many advancements happening in the surf sup boards- maybe designs have peaked for the moment except maybe dogman 'oops' boards etc

anyway the price of the secondhand surf sup suits me at the moment after updating the dw quiver and i don't believe i'm going to be too far behind on this secondhand surf sup

cheers

For sure....but maybe we should be wanting two new boards...maybe the "one new board" concept is hindering our evolution

Since starting this year I have bought 3 second hand boards 9 6 c4 an 8 ft no name and a 9 8 uber fish all for less than the price of one new board over here, didn,t really pick the boards it was just what came up and was cheap enough. If you buy 2nd hand you don,t need to lose heaps when it comes time to sell. I was never going to buy a new expensive board first up when i wasn,t sure if I was going to want to stick with it. Had a paddle on a new 96 anderson which felt pretty good but not good enough for me to pay new price for though. If i saw something similiar at a good price second hand I would be keen to buy it and sell one of the other boards. Those people that have lots of cash should buy new boards all the time surf them and then pass them on to the 2nd hand market so they can get the latest and greatest new thing. Same thing happens in all sports, some people want to always upgrade and others are happy with last years technology. At least I have the latest home made "natural carbon" custom paddle,

I was just thinking WTF does new or second hand matter? Unless your getting a custom theyre all the second hand and exactly the same once you get them wet. I'll buy the right board for me at the time and if the board I want is second hand well that's even better.

First board was new, hand shaped, locally made but an off the shelf model which was quite a bit off normal price.
I'd been searching for a used board from a good brand but seeing as it was summer there really wasn't much used in the catergory I was looking for.
I notice a glut of used boards on Seabreeze atm and put that down to winter.
Also bought a new board when I bought mine, for my wife, made in China with an "Aussie shaped blank"? and it was at a "used demo" price.
Just bought my second board which is a used big name brand which is made in Thailand.
Iv'e mentioned the local/import component because I'd much rather buy a new board which has been locally made.
The latest board I've bought would be much to expensive for me to afford if made locally being a 14' touring shape so the used option was the only route.

billboard i do think sups are over priced but it is like drinking a exclusive bottle of whatever you choose to drink. how many people make sups compared to short boards so you do have to pay for what you like. i am holding my coin before my next board cause i think they are evolving to another level. plus my girl freaks at the amount of coin i spend on toys as it is,new board equals new necklace, ring or whatever will be enough not to hump the leash plug instead of her. i am now about to sell some boards and realise that whoever buys them will be better of than what i am from when i got them. being a bit more educated has made choosing a board hard as well, thought it would be easier but no.PLEASE dont try and tell me that GCCC are doing something good for us or anybody else unless they are related or being blackmailed for some unholy deed. nuff said

1st board 2nd hand because I didn't know if I was going to take to SUPing and also I had no idea of what was the right board for me.Next I'm getting a bran spanker because I think I've found true love and the family wouldn't approve of me wedding 2nd hand goods. After the wedding I will always be looking around for sompthing sweet and sexy for the right price as you do.

My last sup was pre-owned.
I paid $1500 for a sup which retails for $2350 and in excellent condition.
Reasons are obvious.
Can't justify paying full price.

I am buying second hand purely for the fact that is all I can afford right now. $1800 plus for a brand name SUP is a lot of cash outlay for a toy. I would love to buy the exact board I want and most likely will do later but for now are scouring the breeze and eBay for a second hand surf SUP under $1000.

After something around the 9'6 - 10'6 mark and fairly stable for someone 93kg 6'0 so maybe 30' + wide and 150l + volume.

Back on topic, is it worth paying say $1000 for a cheap no name package deal or for a well known brand second hand board? My research has been for the latter and thats my current personal preference however am open to others experiences/thoughts?

Go a well known brand used, not only will it actually work you'll find when you come time to sell it you'll get most of your money back. The no-name will have to be liquidated because all it's going for it right now is that it's new and cheap. It won't have that in a while.
