Hi,

After a week in Waikiki I am hooked and would like to buy a SUP.

I play sport all year round so am fit, 6ft2 and 91kg. I was thinking 12 foot board but would welcome some advice.

I am seeking a good board for still water and surfing.

Advice appreciated.

Hi
Dan it really depends on how much you want to spend as they are plenty of good boards ourt there.

On the cheap side there is stuff like the SUP ATX http://www.kitesurfinggoldcoast.com.au/sup/sup-atx/sup-atx-board-and-paddle-package which come in 11 and 12 ft and work not to bad as a great entry level board

if you want to spend more then there are plenty of great stuff out there and to much to list. Just ask your self one question and that is in one months time what do you think you will be doing more of surfing or flat water? if the answer is surfing then go for the more surfing type boards as they will still do the job it the flat if they have to, if its flat water then longer is better.

Of course there are boards that do both but if you think you would lean one way over ther the other its better to find out now and it will save you some money down the track.

Jacko's spot on, you really need to know what your main use for the board is theny advice is to test ride as many as you can.

There are so many brands out there Coreban, Naish, Starbord, Angulo, Walden, C4 just to name a few that I've just looked at in the latest SUPworld mag so do your research, it can get confusing

Most quality retailers will have hire/demo boards for you to try and some of the brands do demo days. The more you demo the better your riding will get as well so you'll really get a feel for the different designs.

Don't rush into it, you'll find the right one to fit your style.

Have fun,

Adam

I'm 82 kg and for my first board I bought a 10' 6' x 29' chinese "pop out" (mass produced) board and paddle for about $1200. After owning it for almost a year I feel I made the right decision on board type and price point. (No prior surfing exp.)

Before i purchased I did try 2-3 boards in the 10'6' to 12ft range and had decided that would be mainly using it for small wave surfing. $1200 all up and I had a reasonable quality set up that has been a grt board to learn on.

My tip (similar to previous posts) would be to try and predict your future SUP skill level in say 6-12 months and buy a board that will suit those skills. I almost bought a much bigger board that I would have out grown too soon.

Good luck and let us know how you get on...

I wonder if NewSUPer is going to be forced to change his name after a year to AceSUPer.
