Hi all,

I've been surfing for about 20 years and while trying to get something out of trying to enjoy 1-2ft waves over the weekend, I sat and watched a guy on a SUP get about 10 to 20 waves to my one on my surfboard.

The equipment is quite expensive and for someone who doesn't know SUP boards or if it will be for me, it's a bit of a leap.

What is the best way to get started with hiring the equipment in order to decide if it is for me?
- Are there people that hire these things out?
- Im in the Geelong / Torquay area.

Hey Cam,

Were you at OG Main Beach???

You could talk to Murph at Murfs long boards in OG he has some beginner demo boards or for something more high performance you can talk to Paul or Mike at SHQ in Melb for Paddle Surf Hawaii or Ask for Rich at Strapper in Torquay he is great.

All of these people have excellent customer service and will only sell you something that will definitely work for you and they all SUP themselves so they intimately know the equipment.

The service I have received from SHQ in Melb has been superb but I have the advantage of driving up to melb a few times a week.

At first bigger is better especially in the surf, but how big depends on your height and weight!!!! Generally people start on 11ft plus and work down from there.

I recently had a PSH 11 that would work really well for a beginner as it is stable in surf and flat water but if you have weight 90kg + it also rips in surf up to 1.5 OH

Dont buy until you have demoed a few boards in both flat water and surf is my suggestion.

Regards

Phill

Go get yourself a new 11' NSP (btw they're blue now not girlie green) and they are a real bargain price.. they're great to learn on and surf well.. imo.

Next time you're in Melbourne let me know and I'll arrange a few demos for you.. and go for a paddle with you and give you a few tips.

Or.. Contact Rich at Strapper in Torquay.. I'm sure he'll be glad to help.

DJ

That's a nice board. I was looking at the Oxbow 10'6 but not sure about the yellow - it's funny how they seem to think that pastels are the way to go with SUP

I had to smile when I saw it and noticed the hand hole in the middle of the board and went "wow what a really good idea", then the adjustable paddle so the missus doesn't need her own - I must be getting old when the practical things get me more excited than how fast it goes, still it'll be a damn site easier getting to the beach with the bag, umbrella and two young boys.

Will have to search one out in Sydney to have a look.
