Good question.. I actually really enjoy making the vids.. I used to love taking photo's and vids are a whole new level.. I usually have the music in mind first and be busting to do a vid so I can use it.. It's the DW vids that I enjoy doing the most because not many others are doing them and I like to try and capture the thrill of a good DWer.. It's great to be able to look back and remember the day like looking through a photo album but better.. I often just carry my GoPro in my pocket when surfing and don't even take it out.. The other day was a day I thought it would stay in my pocket because it looked so small and overcast most people wouldn't even bother going out.. But it fined up and we had these nice little glassy waves.. and decided it's something worth capturing for myself and also sharing with others.. I get lots of PMs from people thanking me for my vids and encouraging me to keep them up.. I also meet lots of nice people telling me the same thing.. I feel a little pressure about that but I don't mind.. Good surfers probably find my surfing vids soooo boring.. but I think there's plenty of people like myself that just love being on the water and enjoying a crappy little wave.. I'm not trying to show off.. or show how good I am.. I would much rather just film others and I encourage them to get close so I can film them.. I find that much more interesting.. but it's mostly out of my controle.. Especially on downwinders.. I love it when others like to join in and get in my vids.. When the surf is better and bigger I usually don't worry about the camera.. I just want to get out there fast and have fun.. That's why you don't see many of my vids from Big Left at Flinders.. I love that place.. I usually take a bit of a beating.. but it's still great fun.. The last thing I'd be thinking about out there is filming.. I don't spend much time editing.. I tend to rush though it and after see thing that would make it better for next time.. I'd like to think my vids are getting better and better.. and I enjoy the challenge of making them better.. One last thing.. It might seem like every time I paddle I film because there's so many vid's but I almost paddle every day.. It's rare that I miss a day and it's been like that for almost 10 yrs.. I'm lucky to have a job that lets me.. So I only film a very small amount of my time on the water.. Yesterday I tryed to get my friend Tim along with his brand new Starboard Whopper.. He's very keen to join us but couldn't make it.. So a small part of making me take my camera out of my pocket was to be able to show Tim what he missed out on.. Hope that explains where I'm coming from.. and yes I do enjoy just being out there without a camera but sometimes I think.. Wow.. How good is this.. I wish I had my camera..

Nice work DJ! And long may you keep making your videos!

My only gripe is that it reminds me what I am missing when I am traveling Home in 30 hours!

I have downloaded a few of the songs you use in the clips, sometimes I have trouble finding them. Any chance you could name them? I had a look at vimeo trying to locate the version of Beautiful People that you used in the Merimbula 2015 vid but couldn't locate it. Closest i could find was Marilyn Mansons version on itunes which is a bit crap compared.

This is the band that did that 'beautiful people' song... Go full screen and enjoy..

perfectly put DJ, I love watching your vids, always very cruisey, lots of people having fun. They are probably watching the vids and improving as well as a result of seeing themselves surfing or paddling as well,

Always enjoy your videos DJ. Do you have a mount stuck on the back of your paddle for this type of recording? Santa has a request for a lot of accessories for my newly acquired Go Pro and some tips would be greatly appreciated for both recording and editing.

Thanks.. This is what I do.. It's just a simple mount duct taped to the face of the blade.. and I use iMove to edit.

I often mute good vids to put a decent track on top of it. It definitely change the way you appreciate a video...

Another trick: on Surf SUP/prone videos, flipping them horizontally to watch a goofy foot if you are regular helps a lot feeling the action. Downloading them and playing wth a player supporting flipping such as VLC does the trick.
