You just need lots of wind.. Like yesterday.. - can I just add and a lot of skill. That is not what I witnessed yesterday. DJ's paddle was always on the LHS for a reason, everytime you caught a wave you started heading towards the middle of the bay, then without the skill of DJ you had to paddle on the your RHS forever. If you are not back on your board enough like DJ you just go nose under and hope it comes back up without you being flicked off.

The last bit of the run was the hardest, RHS paddling on your knees to make sure you made it back into shore where the cars were, knees got sore so worked out if I sat on my board with my left leg in the water and paddle hard on the right I would make it. Doesn't exactly look like what was on the video, but the board is still on the roof incase there is another downwinder today...

Sounds like you're needing a board with a rudder system. Best things ever I reckon. Sure take all the stress out of choosing the right line for a downwinder or dealing with wind changes

Looks like you're getting lots of practice for the Surftech SUP Winter Classic! - three weeks to go - hope you and some of the Sandy crew can make it to the Mornington Peninsula for this year's event.

I agree Cathy, DJ makes it look much easier than it is, especially in those boisterous conditions. My last "heavy" downwinder ended much the same and I noticed that some east had crept into the wind when you guys were out there yesterday, so I knew that you were in for a tough time at the end. Great fun though

Thanks Kathy.. but I think you're confusing skill with experience..

It was very tricky out there with the wind so strong and so much east in it making the waves feel like they're heading towards Geelong..

Once you've done as many DW'ers as me you'll be cruising along just like me.. Dragging your paddle like me.. and burying your nose and falling off just like me..

It's looking awesome out there again today.. btw.. How good is Ann going these days.. She's killing it..

Yes.. Pearing is all a big part of downwinding..

My legs were getting so tired from holding surf stance for so long.. Started to get lazy and didn't move quick enough and got caught out.. First time I've dug the nose that deep in a long time.

That vid was just up to my first fall.. (about half way).. and about when it started to get really good.. I'm sure I've got plenty of more vid that I've not even looked at yet so maybe another vid is on the cards..

See you out there next time.

When the board flipped and there was no sign of DJ, I was half expecting to see a broken leg rope flapping in the breeze.

Love the music (and the footage of course).

For the next one, would love to see some more in real time speed :-)

Great vid, when the board got flipped by the wind at the end you could really see how blustery the gale was.

A broken leg rope is those conditions would be a disaster!

+1

That was freakin awesome. Did you have to paddle at all? What was the average speed you reckon you may have been doing?
I Don't know, I may have just had an epiphanous moment!! Maybe it was the music but that was like a dance with nature's forces. Ohmmmmmm. Ohmmmmmm
I thought the guitar work was Ziggy Schwab for a little while. Have a listen to him DJ if you liked that. German !2 string guitarist.
