I'm riding my PSH 9.6 WAA as a 2+1 and have been getting some pretty great noserides without hardly trying. And I suck at noseriding! And, I want to get better.

That being the case, if that's what you wanted to work on, what fin(s) do you think might work best? How big a fin? Single? Or what?

Thanks!

And does anyone else think as I do, that this board is a sweet noserider? I do better on it than on my 10.5 Starboard, which would look to be the more natural ride for tip time. Huh. Go figure.

When I was learning how to noseride (Which I still suck at) It was always related to me that single fins noseride better. I tried all the so called noseriding fins and it didnt seem to help me. I was told a big single fin is the ticket, so I guess its about experimenting with different set ups and see what works best.

Hey Linter, yeh that is a sweet board for nose riding. The 10'6Waa is also a sweet nose riding board. I am no expert on single fins but my guess is that a single fin large enough to make a Mal nose ride better is not big enough to improve the performance of a board almost double its size. Especially as the board was designed to nose ride well as a thruster.

I think you would be hard pressed to improve its performance with a single fin unless it was a BIG one (10"+)! Mayb grab one out of a bigger board like a Naish 11'6 and see if it makes a difference?

Hey Linter,

The 9'6WAA is great for nose riding and I am 105ish kg and I only use PC7 thruster set up. Its the rails that are doing the main work on the board.

It has more to do with board position in relation to the wave pocket than fin sizes IMO.

Go to the tom wegener website he has some fantastic info on this subject.

I have also tried a fluid foils pigs ear 8 -9 inch as a single fin in the board and that works really well for me. It has a very broad base for drive but the fin has little or no rake and allows the board to still pivot off the tail easily.

sounds good, thanks guys. think i'll stick with what i got instead and work on technique, instead of searching around high n low for some kind of magic-bullet fin ...

btw/ i don't think my friend s would allow me in the lineup if i arrived with one of those pig's ear jobs. that's one fugly fin!

A nice big 11" fin will give you a fast stable ride high on the wave with no involuntary helicopters

I've used the Starfin winged fin on my 9'8.
It definately allows you to get more nose-riding time.
Unfortunately the pivot point is at the front of the fin so if you hit the bottom you push the rear up through the fin box. Which is why i only use it rarely.
Certainly is different feeling fin.

thanks all, good food for thought.

no pig's ear fins here in the US, so that's out.

meanwhile, dean, that video is terrific, and you are one talented rider. but ... are you riding with a single fin? doesn't look like it but i could be wrong. probably, you don't need the help of a big single, given your skills. but, yeah, maybe it's something i should try out. do you have any specific large-size fins in mind that you think would work?

Hey Linter,

I shot the video and I can assure you Dean is riding a

single fin, about 11 inches long.

If you blow this image up you can see the the 11 inches of the fin in the water in this radical lay back.

We keep being told this wont work and that wont work fins wise laughs, I just let the camera and the video do the talking!

I like small thruster set ups even on my 12ft gun, Dean loves the foot long single fins and super super light boards. We all have serious amounts of FUN and thats all that matters!

I have surfed the star fin in a mal but not in a SUP and I tried it the other way around like the dogmeister is suggesting. Not sure if that was the right way but that was just the way I put it in. I though it worked well for nose riding as it created a lot of lift and stability.

nice and right you are. d'ya know what kind of fin it is?

meanwhile, this is what i've got on hand. from bottom to top, 9.5", 10", and 9". any of em look like they might do the job on the 9.8, while i await on some sort of 11" or whatever it is dean is riding there?

I would try the White cutaway, it has a small base making it loose but the big tip will work fine for nose riding IMO

if i use that white one, would you think small side bites would add or detract from my goal?

meanwhile, it's pretty hard to find 11" fins, from what i can tell; about the only one i've turned up is the jimmy lewis 11". looks like it might be more along the lines of what dean is using:

That's more upright compared to what Dean's using.. The 10 1/2" Naish fin is closer IMO.. You should be able to get Dean's 11" fins from G boards in Torquay.. Afterall.. That's where he gets them from.. and Jonathan had them send him one in the mail not long ago.

Oh the suspense.
The fin Dean uses is a glide 11" ( you may noticed DJ has an 11" with cutaway at rear) and is imported by G Boards in Baines Crt Torquay. Give John at G Boards a ring.

one last question here.

looking at dean's 11" fin in the pic above and the 11" jimmy lewis fin above dean's -- given the different styles, one more traditional, one more a pivot, what would you expect the ride differences to be?

just curious, is all...

Hi Linter

If your standin on the nose it makes little difference that a fin is "pivotal" or not....depth & appropriate area are what helps.
With good speed, Just point the board along a steep section, & slightly up the face...then tippy toe along the center line to the nose.
A board with concave under the nose will help support & stablise. Nose riding high can be a great way of getting through fast breaking sections.
Have fun

Purple ones are faster than blue ones!

Just get in touch with the guys from G-Board in Torquay. 03 52 619013 Fins are cheap and really nice.

Agreed, but i would recommend you place the fin as far back as poss to start with.As in other similar topics on large fins, the idea is create tension between the fin and the the wave. This creates forward drive and speed and creates nose lift. This priciple will need to be reassessed if your going to incorporate side bites, and their overall size?
