Is anyone SUPing in Nth QLD??
I've seen one of the shops selling boards - but is anyone buying them? And if they are, where are they using them?

My brother lives up there, he said they are paddling from Townsville across the bay to Maggie Island regularly.

Outrigging is huge in Nth Qld as that is where it was introduced to Australia, from what I hear many of the paddlers up there are also getting into SUP to cross train etc.

There are a lot of life threatening creatures up there. Crocs, Sharks and stingers not to mention extreme heat.

I seen a great shirt from one of the Nth Qld teams. 'Paddle fast...... or die!' the logo had a croc biting a paddle in half. North Qld, I love the place!

A thought just occurred to me about far nth QLD and that is they have some of the gnarliest whitewater in Australia which would be one of the few place in Oz that would be good for SUP whitewater paddling.

In the wet season the rivers get massive - there are some serious rapids up there, particularly in the Cairns - Townsville stretch:

Beats getting stung by box jelly fish in the Summer months

As you don't get much surf up that way the main attraction would be in doing downwinders, I would imagine. There is always a lot of trade wind action up that way and you have heaps of good options to work with.

I would like to start working out a good Island hoping run in the Whitsundays - now that would be fun. I did a bareboat charter there some years back and there are some excellent downwinder runs that could be done.

Hey SMG, yeh i know of a few that do it, we regularly surf what probably is Qlds best kite/sail board location.
Winter months are best, offshores early and southerly swells, boardies and rashies are still the the go .

Ratchit bay! Is where it's at... man just typing that name brings back some memorys! I grew up there as a mad! Keen surfer haha! and the best place on a good day was Ratchit bay. We used to camp there every weekend, waves or no waves it was on!! Kinda cross between the "beach" and "lord of the flies" we had the whole burn the surf board sacrafice thing going on many a night!! Classic stuff! I remember my mum used to drop us off there with our boards all waxed up and eyes glued to the horizen! the clanging sleeping bag hidden stash full of beer and rum was just in case!

There actually are a lot of points between cairns and port that work on the days after a big blow. That strech of coast has sooo much potentioal but...there is a massive bouncer on the horizen stopping all the fun!!

Miss that place big time! Farks me why??!

Hi mate, ha ha definetly no secret here, the aussie kite freestyle titles will be held here next year, what ya do just jump in ya car head south for an hour or so to the sweetest town in oz. Turn left at the first roundabout head north east to coast , you will be there in 15. Watch the roos and wallabies , locals have given them all names.

I knew this would happen, move away and it turns out to be the best season in years. Hope you guys appreciate my sacrifice to the weather gods. Karratha sucks but hopefully the dollars will let me go somewhere good when the work finishes.
