Hi Guys,

Just finished laminating up a deck with my son.
I now want to sugar deck it.
Can I use polyester resin, in fact, can I give the whole deck a coat for protection / gloss. Or would you advise another process.
We don't want to use grip tape because it has a nice timber finish.
I am sure many of you will have good advice here.

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul, use clear grip tape.
Mordy Surf - Mordialloc
Trigger Brothers - Frankston
Green Room - Ocean Grove
* These guys have it in stock

Let me know where you live and I can give you some more shops.

I've tried the sugar deck on a longboard skateboard in the past and over time the grip worn off and the resin also cracked and looked pretty crap.

Thanks Guys,

Hey Bnaccas I am in Sandringham.
Actually you know me "Paul Lauritz" ;)
From the windsurfing and kiting days..

Yep I should know from my own experience that Polyester isnt so good at flexing as epoxy.....
and clear grip tape sounds the go..

Cheers..

Hey Paul, been a while!

Sandy is easy, try Mordy on 9580 1716 or RPS on 9525 6475. They should both have it in stock. Maybe call first to make sure they still have it.

SHQ could maybe order it in but I wouldn't think this would be something they keep in stock.

we sugar gripped the deck hulls of a cobra cat once.

worst thing we ever did, when you got wet and your skin softened up, it was like sand paper, we'd end up with gravel rashed knees and shins from moving around the boat.

i'm sure it'd be different on a skatey with shoes on and stuff, just the thought of sugar grip brings back memories of how smart we thought we were when we were putting it on, and how stupid an idea we thought it was when we were taking it off.

While you're off topic..

I'm looking at laminating a longboard deck in the not to distant future - never done it before, so any clues on a recommended layup - number of plies, timber choice, axis, laying a glass cloth layer near the top and bottom etc?

Also what's the deal with concave (widthwise) decks? I can make it, but do I need to?

I've had a quick poke around on the net, but didn't find anything especially useful.

I don't skate, but do work with timber and composite stuff on occasion. It's for a mate who wants a nice native timber deck.

555, no idea how to laminate but concave helps with board feel & control.
If it's a longboard and the width is narrower than your feet it will also minimise toe drag when you and doing hard carve turns.

Hey 555

I cant really advise you.
With my son we just copied an existing board.
I made a nice fat board laminating the deck to give rise at each end allowing for a lower deck. Hit it with the planer to get required thickness and a cool effect
Achieved width wise concave with strips of ply. so no science from me.
Cheap bunnings 3 ply veneer x6 sheets. Aquadere exteror glue..
didnt really expect much,, it was a proto for using beter materials.
But surprisingly it seems ok so far..
