Well Brooko where are you?

I have surfed the Charlemont Bombie of Beacon and it wasnt a pleasant expreience!

Tonight just before dark Toby "The Hammer" Kleahamer and Darth Slater paddled out to the Ant Bombie and it was pumpin!!!!!

I was so under gunned on the 9'6 wide as the wave was throttling along at twice as fast as I could possibly paddle and trust me your not gonna split the peak on this baby without getting disconbobulated! I may have to blow th dust of my 10'6 for this job!

Toby was able to get 2 short waves and the adrenaline was dripping out of his ears. He was so stoked as he has wanted to do it for ages.

It took balls to paddle out there and even more to paddle back just before dark but with 30 in the line up at boings and a huge glassy face and only 2 out "us" at the bombie hmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!! The guys in the line up thought we had lost our minds! Its a pretty heavy wave and we learned a lot for next time tomake it safer and easier!

Still way too much fun!

Hey Phill,

Did you see a guy out there on a SUP around 11am?

I'm jealous, I have been hanging to get out there but conditions have never suited when I have been there. Is that Beacon bombie in the pic?

Should be good again tomorrow and Monday. I'm stuffed both days but next time I'm there. Of course you will have to come with me!

No Idea at 11am we didnt get ther till after 5!

No its not the Beacon "Charlemont Bombie" this is Ant Bombie!

The Ant is more predictable but hard to pick the peak as there are no line ups possible!

I will fix that problem next time using marker buoys on the inside and at the approx break line.

We learned a lot tonight!!!!!!!!!

Brendon its a lot further out than you think and sh!t loads bigger when you get there!!!!!!!

You need to ensure you use a really solid 8 - 10mm leggie or you may be in for a very very long swim.

Yeah I would consider taking a vest if I headed out. Breaking a leggie in a situation like that could easily be life threatening. I'm as good a swimmer as I am a distance paddler! I know it gets big cos I've towed it (beacon) but paddling in on a SUP I'm sure would be a nerve racking experience.

I think you could only do it with 1 or 2 others. Alone would be stupid! I'd want someone watching my back!

Good work Phil glad to see your getting amongst it on the psh. I have surfed this bombie 20 yrs ago as a grommet and would love to on a sub.
I never actually really feel under gunned on a 9 6", to me this is still a very big board & I am quite comfortable on it big waves , looks like its gunna be good down here in the morning, going to try to drown this flu

While I was thinking back I broke a leggie out the back of a bombie down Port Campbell way years ago just after a mate said to me he had seen a fin, there was only me and him out and he p**s bolted for shore, my board never got seen again ! I can tell you that was scary , crazy 1 km swim into shore

Brooko,

You are the Master" Said in best David Caradine Kung Fu voice" and have more balls than a bull elephant,

I am just Grasshoper the apprentice lol!

The major issue on this bombie is no refernce points to mark the lineup!

Next time we will take out our own maker buoys as the take off point is very small indeed and you need to know where it is!

There is a drop of about 3ft on take off and you have to drop in very straight or you will get pitched!

As I said we learned a lot, for me its 10'6 territory as i dont have the balls to sit under the lip. Well not yet!

Wish I still had my Laird thats the sort of wave it would love!

Phill

Haha , dont know about master, master of drinking ales maybe . Yeah definate problem way out to sea trying to find the perfect spot in the lineup.

A mate and I went out to hospital reef bombie here a few weeks back and one minute I was right in the impact zone dodging sets, the next minute it was breaking 50 m to the inside of me, once the foam has settled and your waiting for another set to loom your always wondering if your in the right spot, I just kept paddeling up and down waiting.

I chatted to a couple of the guys at the SOUL Longboard comp this morning who saw us paddle out, they were surfing at Boings!

Larry and the boys have surfed the ant bombie on both long and short boards and are going to come along next time to give us some pointers!

I can do with as many pointers as I can get lol as I have unfinished business with this bombie!

When the swell looks right I will take a SUP crew out to play!

All I have to do now is talk lummers into lending me his PSH gun, then Bombie your ass is mine "evil laugh"!

Hey Phil,

Is the ant bombie on Charlemont reef. If so I used to competion spearfish there in the 70's. We had a safety boat at either end of the reef just in case. There are some big toothy critters down...we had to get out one day due to mr bitey. Bloody long swim out there and back!

Hey Pete,

The reef your talking about is what we call the Beacon Bombie!

The Beacon Bombie was very dif****ult for me to surf when I tried it and I paid the price lol

The peak shifts and it has a horse shoe shaped wave that can and did cause me some issues!

Really it was my skill level not being up to it!

The one we went to is the Ant Bombie at the other end of 13th beach!

It is more predictable, but also has several challenges including a steep drop, no way of lining up the break etc etc but it was really a recce to see what we need to get it right for next time!

We are just looking at all the options SUP is now opening up for us I guess!

I have found several new options in the area in the last 3 months, with only a crowd of 2 or when it gets really busy 4or 6 lol.

Hope to see you soon

Phill
