Not a big wave but a snappy (excuse the pun) beach break. Pipe in gizzee. Taking off late....optimistically placed board almost at right angles to the wave in the expectation of stabilising & drifting off along a sucky little tuby thing.
But no! Happened very fast but think lip knocked down the wave side of the board....I slipped off still holding paddle in two hands
Slipped straight down and found the rail of the board now in my face trying to smash my teeth out & neatly snapping my paddle shaft still held in my hands on each side of the rail.
No broken ribs ....but yep....can happen very fast & alarmingly brutal. Was wearing a helmet but nothing protecting the teeth area.
But hey.....fear is fun for sure !

Bummer!.. .. It just goes to show that hanging on with both hands in a fall is not a good thing.. I'm thinking the bottom hand should always let go?

Was a starboard....yesterday morning a friend snapped another one but didn't get the how/why details.
Makes one wonder about what sort of tradeoff there should be between flex/performance & durability I suppose.
And with quality carbon paddles up around 5 to 600 bucks in kiwiland also consider the wood option

Yes but its nice to have a good quality carbon paddle.Have been using my old primitive one that doesn't flex much & weighs a ton. Sure you can catch waves but doesn't have that extra oomph....sort of like a good pavlova without the kiwifruit on top

Have been googling away.....so pohaku have one paddle that is fibreglass & one that is fully carbon....is that the story? Which one you got? Can't see anyone much in nz selling them except maybe the board store in AK
