The other day I was asked if I could help with teaching someone to SUP and it was for a magazine article.

I jumped at the chance.

The magazine is called Outer-Edge.. http://www.outer-edge.com.au/

It's a great Aussie adventure sports type mag..and very good quallity.

They showed me the latest issue (due out any day now) and I saw that they had a big double page spread pic of Laid Hamilton getting tubed on his SUP board.

Check it out.. And check out the next issue (when it comes out) that will show me teaching their beautiful writer how to SUP.

The day went well.. Here's a pic of me showing her what to do before we hit the water... She didn't fall in and caught on quick..

She loved it and now she wants to get one herself.

They were so happy with how it all went they now want to do another story about a SUP adventure.. Something like out Phillip Island crossing.

For those who missed that here it is again.. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39752&SearchTerms=Phillip,Island

Any ideas anyone for a new SUP adventure.. and anyone want to join in the fun?

Depends on how extreme you want to go and what image you want to portray.

I'm not sure ocean crossings are things you want to promote too much. The consequence of mistakes are a bit high.

Some suggestions:

- A glassy morning from Sandringham to Ricketts for lunch then a downwinder back on the early seabreeze.

- Waratah Bay to Walkerville and back.

- Balnarring to Flinders or vice versa depending on the wind (via Crunchies, Suicide, 1st-2nd Reef, Honeysuckle, Pines)

- Cafe crawl from Port Melbourne to Brighton.

- Downwinder from Ricketts to St Kilda on the sea breeze.

- Torquay to Pt Addis or Pt Roadknight via Jan Juc, Bells, Southside etc (at low tide landing options are pretty good. Might be a bit sketchy on a high tide)

Always wanted to do Walkerville to Sandy Point, and I've got good contacts (kids patrol) at the life saving club so I reckon they would come and get us if it all went pear shaped. I was actually planning to do it on my own this Jan so maybe I'll give it a run with the head cam on and the marine radio in my pack (and the shark repellent! - only joking).
Another great little adventure is paddle from Shallow Inlet car park to the entrance and catch some of the little waves out there, obviously tide and wind critical but this is safe and pretty easy in the right conditions.
Islands off the Prom - Shellback or Norman Island are only three or four k's off the beach. And this is only in the area that I know well, I'm open to any suggestions!

There's nice reefs between Walkerville and Waratah Bay. Lots of fish to look at and I've played with dolphins there. The only hassle is that the exit points are at Waratah Bay or Walkerville. You can stop for a rest half-way but the only way out is to paddle or walk along the beach.

From Waratah Bay to Sandy Pt is all surf and sand. I've done it on a kiteboard a few times. It might get a bit tedious on a SUP, unless the surf is good the whole way. (I'm toying with doing it on a paraglider but I haven't had much luck so far and I don't want to expose my good paragliding kit to the beach and dunes and stuff.)

If I was feeling brave I might consider paddling a SUP around the headlands at the Prom and maybe Cape Liptrap. There's no way I would be paddling a SUP out to the islands off the Prom. Lots of bitey beasts, currents and winds out there. If the wrong breeze or current kicks in you are fish bait.

Great ideas guys.

This is a part of an email from them and it seems like they also like the idea of the Prom area.

-------------------------
Definitely like to look at the possibility of a SUP adventure - maybe we can devise a new and intriguing challenge - a first ever Sup journey exploring....?? Corner Inlet near Wilson's prom, or...anyway, thinking caps on, I'm sure we could do a great journey of sorts. Maybe camp out a night.
-------------------------

It would be great to have at least half a dozen of us doing it.

No wonder they like the Prom area ... isn't that where all the sharks are?

But then again it is a adventure magazine!!!!!!!!

Dj keep me posted as If I can get time off work ,I'll fly down my board shouldn't be a problem may just have to borrow a paddle.

What month are you looking at?

Cheers

I've been doing some looking at maps of the prom and some measuring.

You could do a 30km coast run from Sandy Point to Tidal River. The first exit point would be at Cotters Beach or Darby at around the 20 km mark. Possibly do it the other way round to take advantage of sea breezes.

Alternately you could drop in at Darby and go to Tidal for a 10-12km run with exit points at all the beaches along there. The walk out is 300-1200m from the beaches.

You can swing past Shellback and Norman Islands on the way. They're 2 and 3km off the coast respectively. I think landing is prohibited on both the islands and I'm not sure there are any accessible beaches.

A round trip from Tidal River to Norman Island and back is about 13km.

The weather usually comes out of the south and west down there so you could be exposed to the weather but I guess a southerly would help if you are heading towards Sandy Pt.

There are some commercial sea kayak tours but it looks like they mostly do the east coast and Corner Inlet. It's about 2km to Millers Landing from the car park.
