I would like to express my thanks to the Oulaw crew for their efforts in promoting the sport of Stand up paddling, they are a very switched on & professional bunch of Paddlers & WE can certanly learn from them.
The event was set in the lovely coastal town of Lorne, a course of 3 laps starting from the beach then turning around a can set 800 m or so then retuning to the beach & running around a flag.
We could return with the small waves wraping in along the rocky point to make things interesteng......particularly when so small & close.
Anyone who has surfed Lorne point would know of its legendary waves & how tricky they can be....particularly when trying to ride them with a 20' board......that may be some sort of Guinness book record! The smallest Lorne wave with the longest board?
I was hoping to try the 20' river cruiser against other fast craft to see how it actualy performs.....like Lummers & his gondoa The 20' is not built for racing, just to explore the limits...this was evident at the start when my son on a 14' planing hull left me for dead.....I couldnt catch him till the first mark 800 m away! But on the run back to the beach the length of the board was able to gain more advantage almost picking up small runners & I had the luck to be in the right spot at the right time to hook a wave or 2 to the beach.
It was a heap of fun so next time guys come along
Cheers

Hey Yoda,

Stoked to hear you cleaned up on the 20ft weapon and not surprised that Adam was flying on what ever he paddled.

Sounds like the wiley old fox just got over the line against youth and stamina.

Well done Dean .

How was the 20' board in open water, was the nose sticking in a problem? I bet it has you thinking about rocker for open water looong boards and how little you can get away with.

Hi All,
Great to see father & son (Dean & Adam) racing each other on the week-end, all paddlers were the winners @ Outlaw #4 Lorne.

Two competitors received an OC paddlers 50+ UV paddling tee www.paddlers.com.au , Outlaw Coffee Mugs & stickers.,
Dean Sr, was given the main prize of a Rip Curl wetsuit for the best wave caught & 1st over the line.

Race course was 3 laps which ran in & out through the Lorne pt line-up. Competitors paddled out 1km went around the OC paddler turning can back into the beach to jump off there board and make a small beach run through then back onto there boards and out into it again.

Event picture’s attached. Dean, on that 20ft long board & I still don’t know how he set the rail so early to catch this wave (see pic’s).

Thank-you to all competing & now becoming Outlaw’s.

Next event: Outlaw #5 Pt Addis to Torquay Pt. 12km down-wind Open Water 9th Jan 2010.
Pervious event CV must be sent confirming event history before Outlaw confirms your event start. If you are interested in this event send your event CV applications to the www.outlawpaddling.com This is an event for experience open water paddlers only that currently train or compete in wind & ocean swell riding

Note: Thanks to Torquay "Rescue again"

Hi Dave,
The "great work" was keeping off the rocks The small waves were trying their hardest to deposit us on the rocks!
I think I better make something more appropriate for this sort of thing.
Trying to sprint out even through these little waves was just not working with the heavy titanic, once its moving it's speed is ok, but smaller/lighter is faster.
My youngest sons board is fast & takes less effort to keep it at speed. Its 16'x24" stability only just ok for me on a river, but even a calm sea like we had at Lorne, it's too tippy for my liking too hard to ballance & put in at the same time.
How did you go with hobie 12'6"? I think there is a dealer here in Torquay..South Coast Longboards?
The 2 river boards, 20'x26" 16'x24" & planning 14'x17"

The first container of Hobies have arrived but it seems there are no 12'6 boards in it . Just wave boards but I am keeping an ear to the ground

I'm just about to shape a 12'6...will be similar to a Hobie.....but lighter of course. Whats the Hobie CR1...about 12 kg? I should be able to make 9kg or so
It will be just a matter of tweeking it for the job required.....totaly flat water...or a few waves.....haven't decided yet.
Come for a spin when it's done
Cheers
Dean
