Hey guys there has been a lot of talk about travel to PNG. I have been investigating it too.

I have had awesome feedback about these guys from some of the more well travelled surfers around the west coast!

2 of the Grove locals were raving about the trip and the service and these guys arnt easily pleased ( grumpy old mal riders lol).

I rang them and they also have some SUPS on the vessel.

They work out of Kavieng

I think the best time is Feb to April does anyone know?

What shots do you need to go to PNG?

What is the best way to get to Kavieng?

Well I'm not really the best person to comment on the quality of the various surf tour companies as most of my surf touring consists of jumping in my car/boat and just heading off. But I will say one thing, part-timers dont last long in PNG so choose someone who already has established connections in the country.

The best way to get to Kavieng is to go to Brisbane or Cairns then get a flight via Port Moresby. I'm pretty sure the only major Airline that flies into Kavieng airport is Air Niugini. I don't think you can fly there direct from Australia.

The main surf season is November to April.

There are two schools of thought on shots. Your main risk is Malaria. You can take medication to prevent this but the side-effects of the drugs are pretty bad. I personally do not take anti-malarials and have had no trouble (touch wood) but I am very careful with how I live and expose myself to the parasite. ie:

Never let stagnant water collect near my home/work
Always stay inside at night or cover up with clothing
Burn coils/wear insect repellent
Flyscreen on all windows and doorways
Sleep under a mozzie net

I advise you to do your own research, speak to your Doctor and make an informed decision.

Interesting topic. I'm heading up to Kavieng in about three weeks time with a bunch of mates, Was planning on taking a couple of shortboards, but am tempted to reduce to one and take SUP instead.
Anybody taken a SUP there before? any airline boards restictions on size etc? We are flying Air Nugiuni ex Sydney to Kavieng via PM. Statying at Nusa Island Retreat
Any input welcom

I worked on Bougainville (nearly 30 years ago) and the bugger there was sand flies on the black sand beaches. Seriously bitey little bastards and you can't tell them from grains of sand until they move.

The solution was to run from the water to the truck then spray yourself with Aerogard.

Bugs weren't a problem on the white sand beaches or staying on board boats.

We took chloroquin tablets and drank loads of tequila. I think the quinine in gin and tonic is probably better for fighting off malaria but I was young ...

Once bitten twice shy as they say.
I was in PNG a few years ago... got bitten.. got malaria.

Do yourself (and your family) a favor if you go, take a mozzie net, use repellent, cover up at dawn and dusk and speak to a doctor about anti-malarial drugs.

There are some seriously good waves to be had over there, and outside of Port Morseby the locals are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.

Well worth the trip... just do the research and take precautions

I flew with my 12' SUP from Brisbane on Air Niugini without any dramas. Make sure you pack it well though and try and pad it as much as you can because they will find a way to break it for you. Especially the nose and tail.

Internally I have not tried to carry my SUP but I'm told the aircraft that operates the Kavieng route is a Fokker F100 so they should be able to take sizable boards. I know guys that regularly take 10' Mals without issue.

SuPing around Kavieng would be great as there are heaps of little islands you can paddle between.

I agree with the coment about Gin and Tonics. Its the best drink for the tropics because of the Quinine in the tonic. Seriously though, do not take a relaxed attitude to Malaria precautions. You really do not want this disease.

I have a mate that did a lot of travelling/surfing there over 2 years with some type of charity.
He rekons there was some OK waves but really really inconsistent.

He compared it to Vanuatu but not as big but generally less wind which is good.
