Hi All

Looking at a PSH quiver options as the finance committee has agreed to owning enough boards for the whole family to paddle at once. Good on you Ruddy!

I have a 9 6 wide Ripper and the wife has a 9 8 Starboard. Both of which the kids love paddling around now, they are not so keen on the surfboards as sups after paddling the psh around.

So 2 boards needed. The kids are a little young to get dedicated boards for them but that will happen.

So I was thinking a 10 6 AA for larger waves and flat water paddles with the family and a 10 wide AA (comes out in Sept) as a general all rounder. With the 9 6 used on the really clean days.

In Perth so I cannot demo them which would be nice. Any thoughts or ideas?

Hey Hilly, what weight are you and how many years of surfing experience have you got?

I'm 82kg with 30 years of surfing and my quiver will be:

- PSH 9'3" Ripper (everyday surfing board)
- PSH 12'0" Gun (for flatwater paddling, really small pointbreaks and really big bombie sessions), haven't actually got this yet but it's on its way.

They will be matching in the blue/white design - because I'm just a little bit anal, re. things like that.

I think a two board quiver (as above) should cover me for most conditions. I could maybe also go a smaller, super high performance board for competitions but am waiting to see what comes out in the next batch of designs (or I might go a custom for this).

You could get Rod to shape you up a couple of boards...getting good reviews from all who have them......better the Rudd money goes to a starving aussie craftsman than a starving Hawaiian one...hahahahaha

i,m guessing Hilly is about 105kg and if I'm right then the 10'6 AA would be a good choice unless you can wait for the 10 footer which sound pretty good as well from all reports otherwise i like the sound of Casso's quiver with the 12 foot gun.

105kg surfed 35yrs, windsurfed 20yrs, kited 8yrs and sup for 2 years. Flap around ok for a old bastard.
Considered the 12 gun but would not get the use out of it as the waves over here tend to be choppy when big and the 12 looks a little tippy at 28 wide?? What do you reckon?

I like what I know and know what I like. He is a bit far away.

After 2 boards will wait for the 10 footer unless I get a better idea.

Hi Hilly,

I am not sure whether you want the board for you or for the kids?

or how old the kids are?

I am also 105 kg so we have some thing in common but you have about 32yrs more surfing exp than me so take that into account.

If you already have a 9'6 and you want a board for flatter days that will also rip in big waves then may I suggest the 11ft psh. If you get a gumby come along they will be able to ride it as it is quite stable but in OH+ for me it was a weapon. I just dont think there is going to be that much difference between a 9'6 AA and a 10'0 my self? Especially if you also have a 9'8 starboard.

Best regards

Phill

Good comments all thanks, I am just thinking out loud at the moment.

I want to get off the 9 8 Starboard it really is the wife's board, if I go away and need a bigger board the wife misses out at the moment. Got in heaps of trouble when I broke her paddle, lucky I did not hit the rocks hard at Jakes with the 9 8.

So really I want a 3 board quiver for me which my 8 and 6yr old will play on in flat water and really small waves. Well my 8 yr old daughter has claimed the 9 6 ripper already.

I think there would be a bit of difference between the 9 6 ripper and 10 wide AA (when that finally comes out). What do you reckon Phill or Casso? you have tried more PSH boards than me.

Not sure I need to go longer than 10 6, how does the 10 6 or 10 6 wide and the 11 compare?

Haven't ridden either of these but going by other PSHs I have ridden - I think the extra six inches and the fuller nose of the 10' Wide AA will be just the right amount of extra foam you'd need for your weight (on those days when it's not really clean).

IMO - The 10' Wide AA would be a great everyday board for you and the 11' Wide AA would be too limiting for somebody of your surfing experience.

Hi Hilly,

From a kids perspective:

The 9'6 would be the absolute longest I would go for the kids just from a safety concern, especially in waves of any sort.

I have had Kristi my 13yr old who surfs a long board quite well on my 10'6 and she has no hope of controlling / turning the board in surf! Its just too big and heavy even with a paddle.

Nesha my 8yr old can SUP surf the imperial 8'2 in small waves but it was a very high performance board made by Dave Boyd for himself to rip on and it was designed to turn on a dime. Even with Nesha's 32kgs it turns easily, but it would thrash her if it hit her and I only allow her on it with a helmet.

Just some food for thought

The 9'6 Wide I think is about 20% less stable than the 10'6 wide and the 10'6 wide AA is 20% less stable than the 11ftr in my opinion. I think if you ride the 9'6 well then the 10 wide or the 10'6 AA would work now I have a better idea of what you want.

Me thinks Blane is shaping too many great boards lol

Regards

Phill

Thanks Phill I agree the kids will just play in flat water and tiny waves, I will get them their own boards if they are interested down the track. Bigger waves at the moment they are on soft surfboards, both are standing coming in with the foam which is great. No boogers.

Me thinks Blane is shaping too many great boards lol

Exactly! that's why I am asking the question.

Confirms what I was thinking, thanks Casso.

Hilly having seen you paddle I think you should just get 3 more 9'6 rippers for the family.Especially now you have the big Nalu.
I reckon AA will probably concur.

I think that is a compliment

The Nalo has gone the way of 2 other paddles and is cracking on the handle so in negotiations now Broken 3 paddles now just paddling can anyone beat that? No I did not fall on them.

Back on topic - I think I will make a compromise and get a 7 2 Starboard for Drum (My son) and a 10 Wide AA when they come out. As Casso said "IMO - The 10' Wide AA would be a great everyday board for you". I think he is right I will just have to wait.
