Has anyone weighing 105kg+ riden both these boards?

I have a Starboard 9 8 but it sucks in decent surf.

My JL 10 8 now feels long in the waves looking to down size, the 9 8 I use is the wifes.

Seriously looking at the 9 6 Wide Ripper as an option.

Dilemma is to part with 2k sight unseen on one, no demos in WA. The shop guy says no worries but it would be nice to hear from someone independant who can compare the stability and glide of these two boards, as I can ride the 9 8 easily.

Have illusions of Grandeur

Hilly ,

I have the PSH - 9'6 wide Allrounder and im stoked with it but im 20kg's lighter than you.

I would say go for it only if your confident in the surf and are prepared for it to be a little unstable at rest / choppy conditions.

The 9'6 wide Allrounder is thicker than the ripper model and with a full nose (mal shape) should be more stable and well worth considering.

The Ripper boards are popular for more serious sucky waves for sure but i still have not ridden one.....hope to in a few weeks time.

As for the construction and useability ....Paddle Surf Hawaii boards are A1.

i run Sunny Garcia FCS side fins and a 5 1/2" back flex fin.

We sell PSH at Strapper Surf Torquay.

Hope this helps you , only wish this board had a carry handle on the deck.

Hi Andrew,

You should give us a call or try Jason at WOK (he has a couple) and arrange to have a paddle on the new 9'8".

With the new rounded pin tail, there is heaps less volume in the tail.

When standing in the centre paddling position stability is pretty much on Par with the swallow tail model but once you are on a wave and you step back the board becomes a lot more lively. The board feels a lot faster than the old one both on the flat and once on a wave.

I am yet to get any real waves on consequence, but all reports from the Crew down south is that they hold in really well in overhead waves.

Just spoke to Jas will try it.

Hey Andy,

I know it's not what you are after but I just bought the Star 10'5" x 30 following the snappage on Saturday. Funny looking board but the thing paddles really well even under my 125kgs. Should be an interesting challenge for me in the surf...

Hey Hilly, im that weight And have the 9 6" naish It rips a fantastic board and really worth checking out for solid surf. I also have an 8 6" that I am yet to really test. I have smaller fins in it and this has made it loose as, got some bombs on it yesterday even taking off inside the whole pack and making it all the way through, I swear one wave I got I would have struggled to get down the face on my shortboard, good old reliable 9 6" hung in there with out slipping out sideways, could not rate this board any higher in sizey surf In waves 5 ft and plus , you can really lay into it like a shortboard.

Would you believe he snapped it paddling over a wave, nose of board smacked him on the snoz.

Surprising how easily it snapped, he is a large lump of a lad though. Not a good ad for Naish.

Any photos of the black eyes big fella?

10 5 would be too close to the JL 10 8 which I am inclined to hang on to as it really works well in all size waves and handles chop.

I am a fully fledged member of the .1 tonne club also. I have just ordered a PSH 9'6 Wide AA from AA!
I have been riding a Starboard 11'2 for a year now so paid my dues and loved every minute on it.
Time to get shorty as some decent swells arrive in Perth .
Should be here in a week or two. If you can wait that long I give you a decent review then ...if you can wait that long.

Thanks Hilly,
He snapped it paddling over wave!!! Was it local or up Lancelin way? I don,t know how big the swell was around here over the weekend as I was in Walpole.

Hey Luke,

Yes it broke paddling out, I tried to catch a wave and missed it, (1st wave of a 3 wave set) spun around and paddled over the first wave, then just as I got to the top of the second wave it feathered and the lip hit the under side of the nose which then drove the nose of the board into my face....ouch! lots of claret

Check out the crack on the nose! Zinc cream from my face, the other shot shows the whole horrible mess....

Wave was a little over head high at the peak, at a secret northern location

At least I don't have to worry about the deck grip falling off any more...

Yes it was the 11 4

Basecurve I'm in no hurry can I have a spin when you get it? Pm me if ok. If I can paddle it no worries the surf pedigree of them really interest me.

Off to try the Starboard 9 0 x 30 and the 9 8 x 30 now. The 9 0 quad stinger looks really weird. Had a stinger surfboard in the 70's went like crap in bigger waves wonder if the concepts improved?? People raving about the smaller one in another thread.

The PSH look like 'modern' surfboards and surfboard design has been developed over 50 to 60 years so it should work.

Always surprises me when a 'new' surfcraft comes along like windsurfing, sup or kiting that it takes them so long to get to the modern surfboard outline as the best shape. Why reinvent the wheel? Early kite surfboards were really weird and I suppose early sup design was about volume so they blew up longboards. My first 11 6 was a big yellow pig, but fun, got me in! love the sup.

Hey Hilly, I flat water paddled the 9'8 yesterday, it's stability compared to last years is marginal in my opinion. It still has high volume nose but the change to the pinny will perform much better in the waves as you well know.

Also I was checking out the starboard brochure, they have some nice boards in the 9 x 32" range that look like they could be big performers in the surf. Only problem for us bigger guy's is the volume is around the 130L mark, makes for a wobbly session.

I've kind of ordered mine, but interested to hear what you think if you get to demo a few. Let us know how they go mate.

I'm sure that it could be fixed from the photo's it dose not like that deep of a crease seen plenty of sup of all brands crease like that and they all fix up fine. unless it's worse than it looks?

Hope to see you on the water again soon Ice.
just spent the last week at Rotto playing on the 9'8 at transits and Radar reef. Perfect conditions most of the time. Love the 9'8 and cant wait to get it up north later in the year.
