Yes I admit I am a PSH Board Whore!

I asked Session if I could please borrow the PSH12ft Demo Gun for a mate to demo and the weather has been really bad since I got it.

This morning I had 1hr before work, the wind was 30kn side shore and there was shoulder high solid waves on a near by reef. Not ideal but i dont plan surfing it in great waves!

I had only paddled around in 6" dribble at OG13 and that was a lot of fun but didnt really demonstrate what this board can do!

As I paddled out the the wind was increasing and I wondered how I would go.

The board sliced through the white water with ease and I got out the back without even getting my hair wet! The stability is excellent.

A 4ft solid wave approached and I tried to turn the QE 2 with howling west wind etc and I didnt quite make it and got taken broadside and got thrashed. Note to self foot much further back next time this isnt a 9'6.

Another solid wave approched I paddled using the wind to assist the turn and gain speed. The board accelerated at a rediculous speed and in seconds I was off on the maiden journey.

I was throttling down the line so I stepped back and ripped a big forehand turn with such ease it amazed me. I simply could not believe it. So I thought hmmm lets see how hard I can push this baby in some juice. I cranked a huge bottom turn and threw the board at the lip and prayed a little. To my surprise it came of the top with ease and I landed a nice floater and then got thrashed in the shore break with an epic smile on my face.

The paddle out through the white water was a doddle it just cruised through it no problem at all.

I waited for a larger bomb, used the wind again to turn and went as hard as I could ripping the 12fter into huge botton turns and then just as hard of the top and it performed flawlessly.

It totally staggered me what I was able to do with this 12ft board. I caught 12 waves one after the other and just had adrenalin dripping out of my ears.

Everyone else around me just struggled to even paddle on. They were amazed at well how well this tanker performed.

Now lets get this straight its not a small board and it cranks out big turns but the way it does it is just spectacular!

I then paddled it down wind style and easly caught 3 runners, so it has potential in this area as well. The up wind slog taught me not to do that again.

I have not had this much fun in years, I left the beach absolutely frothing like a grommet.

The good:

1) This board will catch anything from 6" to as big as you want looking at Blanes pics

2) Stability even in extreme conditions chop sidewind etc is excellent.

3) This board will carve ripping turns that will blow your mind yet is really predictable its like driving a porsche.

4) The board has great down wind potential ( not going to beat a Pene or a DC but you will catch runners easily)

5) It will simply slay bigger waves (still frothing) Ant Bombie your ass is mine evil laugh!!!!!!!!

6) Beginners could easily have this board for a couple of years and not need to change

The Challenges:

1) This is a big ass board and it is heavy getting it off the roof in wind like we had today is an exercise. I was trapped against the fence for 5mins and could not move at all until the wind dropped.

2) Your not going to lug this baby long distances even with a handle especilly if your slightly built

3) You will need weight I believe 85kgs plus to make it sing but if you have the mojo you will fall in love.

Summing in up:

I WANT ONE NOW!

Phill

Rich good luck in geting it back I have hidden it its mine all mine!!!!

Had one for 2 weeks and the weather has been sh1t. There is a pattern there.

Went on a downwinder (first ever) on the river in 30 knots which I really enjoyed, surprisingly, being a dedicated surfsup'er only. Even did a cutback on the 6 inch wind chop.

Will give it a go in the surf this weekend, finally.

Lacey,

You read minds, I would love the same board in a 10 or an 11.

Unlike others I am not sponsored lol, I am just a kook and love riding Blanes boards!

So I dont have any pull in that area!

The 85kg thing is just my guess, so maybe ask casso what he thought!

I am already signing the divorce papers lol BUT I DONT CARE HA!

Cool review Phill. My thoughts precisely. I think you could go a bit less than 85kg though. I'm 81kg and I think Blane would be less than me - and we both love the 12 footer too.

I still haven't had the chance to take it out in anything over waist high (hence the lack of a full review by me) but am so looking forward to seeing how it handles some juice.

Casso,

Its so much fun it has to be illegal!

I may be able to sneak out again in the morning I am now an addict!

Sadly my fix is a long way off!

Session is so cruel to let me surf this board then take it away.

No one on the Goldie will want one anyway[:p

I use a Methane in the surf too ... generally. But I use my Shaka Pu'u with the Gun (even in the surf). The slightly bigger blade is great for pushing the big girl around.

Now you're just bragging.

Just when I thought a 9'6" might be on the cards along comes another single board that will do everything, including flat water. Groan.

Hey Lacey,

I love the methane as i get a fast initial stroke rate which gets my wide ass load moving very quickly. Bit like puting a 4 x 4 into low range to getgoing! The smaller paddle has doubled my wave count easily.

The methane for me is critical on the 9'6

Most prefer the Shaka Pu'u but i still prefer the methane

Phill

Still do not get those teaspoon paddles love my nalu on both the 9 6 and 12er. I reckon I can catch a wave 10m sooner, got better against a strong wind and get out to the bombie heaps quicker. Horses for courses.

I am a bit of a gorilla have snapped 4 shafts just paddling. Cannot get the power I like with small blades. I like the extra balance point when just standing as well.

Hey Blane, if you see this thread would be very interested to know your thoughts on the "weight" of the rider suitability for a board like the 12' gun. Seems that Byron Maui's kids do pretty well on it and I'm sure they don't weight too much, just trying to get my head around the whole volume/board thickness/length suitability for different size riders. Can't imagine that 10kg difference of rider weight would really make that much difference to the ability of something as big as the 12' Gun to work or not work on a wave.

Guess that's all part of the magic of shaping boards, particularly production boards.

Hey Jonathon,

I would be keen to know Blanes thoughts too.

Kristi has paddled my 9'6 in the river, quite often and kickturns it with little effort. When she gets into the surf it a whole different ball game, at this point she cannot catch a wave successfully even in small surf. She tends to bog a rail all the time and lacks the weight and strength to turn the board. I put it down to over all volume. Kristi is about 40 ish I think.

I havent seen the Byron Maui footage, can you please post the link if you have it.

Regards

Phill

Jonathan.. re the weight thing.. I think in smaller waves it's not such a big deal but dropping down the face of a big wave and getting to max speed before cranking into a bottom turn, that's where weight is needed to hold a rail in and that's where a board might need to be made for a particular riders weight.....IMO..

When I saw the PSH gun at the OG13 demo day I was keen to see the rail shape and was rapt to see nice thin rails towards the tail.. BTW .. SHQ will have AA's gun there in the next few days and I'm hoping to give it a paddle.. ..(don't tell Andrew)

True dat...in smaller surf a lighter rider can use weight and foot positioning....once it hits double over ++ and your light you need to be a **** hot surfer....a bit of weight and strength defo helps in XXXL stuff especailly if its choppy

After a year of me whining about the lack of wind, and people telling me I should get a SUP, SUP's the best, etc etc, now I can finally say...

You should get a windsurfer for those conditions!

Man I've looked forward to this moment for ages.
