da king,
you wont you piddle as short as possible to not injure you shoulders but not so short that you will injure your back. On bigger boards you will find longer paddle is required as your standing higher and on smaller boards your feet are wet so a shorter paddle. As you board is in the middle, I would guess about 6 inches longer than your height so between 78-80 inches long. Go 78 if you can because it will be better when surfing as you will not have to lift it so high over your board when changing sides. See again one day in the west or when ever.

My surf paddle is 5 inches taller than me and my flatwater/downwind paddle is 7 inches taller. Works well for me.

Maca

Yer ive used a short paddle learning and it seems to smashes the side out of the boards. (when its to short )
Ive got the carbon (starboard paddle)? as big as it comes for a bit and i enjoy it ......... flexi shaft

Also whats with designing paddles with an ugly sharp seam on the top joining sides of the paddle blade?

For surfing only, started with 7", felt too short - now use one 8 inches taller than me. Used to be a C1 slalom paddler so don't know if that has anything to do with the longer length?

Kingy, go to the standup zone forum and get totally confused, all the top supers have very different lengths.Like demoing sups ,i suggest you try as many paddle lengths as you can b4 putting the blade to the shaft.I think in 12 months time you will probably be reviewing what your using now anyway. I mean how different does your paddle length feel when you ride on your backhand?

Don't know about that join thing? I guess the blades and the shafts are made seperately so they got to join them. Go with what feels right but be careful if its too long, and you are getting into lots of regular sessions, watch with your shoulders.
Look into correct stroke and practice it.
Use bottom hand as lever and push forward with your top arm.
Keep your elbows down and the shaft upright.
Dont swing it around too much and keep the stroke minimal.
Go for more strokes than fewer deep powerful ones.
Try and use your whole body in the stroke, not just your arms.

I was lucky enough to score one of the Werner Spanker paddles that are up on the Buy and Sell section (the second one is still up for sale I gather).

Anyway, its got 10cm or so of adjustability. I had thought I would use it at the shorter end but I've ended up going to the full added extension.

So add the benefit of adjustability to its bullet proof reputation, light weight, nice big blade (most are too small for me) and its ability to split into two shorter pieces for the car, and you've got one sweet paddle IMHO.
